Can anyone give me some detailed instructions on how to change the transmission fluid on my 1988 Honda Accord? I also need to know what type of fluid to use and what filter to get. Thanks!

Mike

If I remember correctly there is no filter.... you can wait for someone else to post or even see if the part is availble... if it doesn't exist then you don't need to change it... as for flushing it just pull out the dipstick then crawl under the car and on the bottom of the tranny you will see a bolt that generally has a hole in it that fits a 1/4" drive socket wrench, put the wrench in there and back it off and allow it to drain.... then just fill it to where it's supposed to be (start with two quarts of Honda ATF Fluid, check with your local dealer....) make sure you don't overfill it...

I haven't worked with any Honda Accord transmissions, but i have worked on a Chevy 305 trans and a trans out of a 92 Nissan Sentra. Both transmissions had filters, neither had any type of drain plug. Manual transmissions do not have filters, but an automatic transmission has a pump that pumps the fluid and i'm pretty sure that they all have filters. If there was a filter, when you take the pan off you will see it. However, i am not completly sure since i have never worked on an accord trans. I would think that there would be a filter b/c crap could get into the trans some how.

Sir nasty pretty much explained how to,, as for the atf fluid,, first of all ,, change and refill you will need 3 qts, on your car you can save some money and use DEXRON III OR IV any brands will do ,, if you got the extra money, use HONDA ATF-Z1 ,

the dipstick is located on top of tranny , below the lower radiator hose, remove it , put a funnel in the hole and add 3 qts of tranny fkuid ..

As for the filter, ,, all Hondas have a filter but it is unreplacable,,, it is located, between the pump and the valve body,, to get to it , one would have to totally disassamble the tranny intrnally ,, ,,there is no tranny filter that you can replace as of yet .. And honda trannies do not have a removable pan ..
