There is a plastic gear strip attached to the antenna that is pulled in or pushed out by a worn gear drive to retract/extend the antenna. I believe there is a DIY description of repair for this problem. You might consider two options as the OEM repair strip is fairly expensive and problem seems to recur. Either replace w/ a complete power antenna replacement. I did this and it lasted several years before failing again, or replace w/ a black stub whip, which is what I did last time my power antenna failed. Reception is not as good, but OK for most purposes, not too good at all for AM. Replacement strips are available on ebay, and elsewhere for aftermarket replacement. good luck
