I am trying to fix the sputtering at idle problem on my 1997 accord 4DSE 4cylinder.  If I am in park or at a stop light with the AC on or off there is a change in idle followed by a sputtering and recovery to normal or shaky idle.  I have done a few things recently which needed to be done (motor mounts, FI service, new plugs and wires) and I still get the sputtering at idle.  I heard it could be the ignition coil, but wanted to diagnose before purchasing an expensive part.

I hope that you didn't use Bosch plugs!  They kill Honda coils.  FI service was a remove and ultra-sonic cleaning?  Have you searched for this problem???  Others have posted similar issues.

I used dealer plugs and wires.  I searched for this problem, but didn't see anything specific to this exact problem and year/model.

alright .... the year doesn't have to be exact, just the same generation accord.  Also I think that under the hood, the special edition is the same as any 4 cylinder.  Look up Honda Accord in Wikipedia for info on the generations of accords.  Glad to see that you used NGK's!  I'll help find some links for you.  Did you look in the DIY section?

DH seems to be looking for vacuum leaks a lot as well as Idle Control Valve issues.  These threads will give you ideas of what to check and test.

I think that's enough to get you started.  All I did was search for "idle".

Well, he said that he searched ..... as someone mentioned last week, some of us are better at it than others.  rsanchez was simply too specific.

But yeah .... I did think of you when I linked all of those threads.  Also, with all of that reading, he'll learn a lot more than he intended, never a bad thing.
