hey guys,
Car - 2000 Honda Accord SE VTEC 4 cyl Auto 209,000 miles runs great
Problem - The mechanics in the tranny have failed causing very, very low fluid pressure resulting in slippage(among other things) - This tranny was originally replaced by Honda at 77,000 Miles as part of their recall.
Solution - I brought the car to a Transmission specialist. They were going to charge me $500 just to crack it open an tell me whats wrong. Then $1900 for a rebuild kit + labor.. The car has too many miles for that.
So, I want to replace the trans myself with one from a junkyard or something, but:
QUESTIONS -
1. If I find a used automatic transmission, what else do I need to have it properly work? ie, computer, harnesses?? Or will it be direct swap and work just fine?
2. Would any Honda Accord 4 cyl trans bolt up? or do I need a 98-02 specific?
3. If Honda recalled all those transmissions, would me getting one out of a totalled Accord result in failure as well?
4. Would I be better off swapping the trans out for a manual? and if so, can I follow instructions from a 93 Accord swap?

The car has 209,000 Miles on it. I''ve taken care of it for all these years and I really want to keep it as my daily. I just need to know these few things so I can start finding a trans.

Thanks all!

1. You should only need the transmission itself. Your car is already rigged to operate it properly.

2. You would need a 98-02 auto tranny.

3. There is a 50% chance the transmission you swap in will fail, unless you overhaul/rebuild it before you put it in.

4. If you don''t rebuild it I''d swap in a manual. It''s just as hard and just as expensive, so I''m sitting on the fence about it. At the same time the manual tranny will probably last longer than the auto. Your call. Yes, the 93 swap is similar, but you probably can''t follow it to a T.

Ok that clears some things up.
The transmission specialist told me that i needed the computer out of the same car I pulled the tranny from along with other parts. I''m pretty sure he just wanted me to get it done there so he could rape me in price.

Ok so all I need is the tranny itself.

I''m going to call Honda of America for questions as well. I have heard of a few people who have called and actually have gotten a new auto trans, installed from a Honda Dealer for ~$1200. Now I don''t know if this is true but it''s worth calling about.

I want to do the manny swap... but I rather inquire about the auto trans just cause it''s so much easier to swap in.

Have you done or seen a successful manny swap in a 6th gen?
