Anyone have any advice on where to buy a used honda accord j30A4 engine (2003 accord with 6 cylinders)?  I have checked around at 7 different places and it is hard to tell who is good to buy from and who isn''t.  Can anyone tell me what is a good compression reading for the cylinders?  I have gotten quotes of about $1,100 to $1,500 for low mileage engines.  Most are around the 30,000 to 65,000 mile range.  Mine had 68,000 miles on it when it died.  Someone left some metal objects in the air filter that got sucked into the engine and destroyed it.

I had to replace a Dodge Ram 1500, 5.9L V8 3-4 yrs back. I used car-part.com to locate potential engines in my vicinity. I called the yard and asked for the donor vehicle VIN. If they wouldn''t or couldn''t supply I dropped them. They should have this info. I went to Carfax to trace the history of the vehicle. This isn''t foolproof, as you can''t be sure the VIN vehicle is indeed the donor. I searched to see if there is someway to crossr-refence engine ID''s and VIN''s but did not find anything. I suspect manufacturers have this info, but it is not public to my knowledge. However, most histories seemed pretty believable, but not all.

I also found that the operation of the junkyard and general cleanliness of place was important to me. I found some yards that had the engines still in the vehicle, usually w/ a broken hood sitting over the engine as the only weather protection. Some had the engines removed and stacked on pallets in a dry warehouse. Prices were fairly similar from all sources( $700-$1000 depending on mileage). I purchased insurance (~$150) to cover the cost of labor, in case the engine turned out to be a dud. Thankfully, I didn''t have to try to use it. Most provide a 90-day warranty, but don''t cover labor. My engine has performed fine. Vehicle has a trans problem now so I may be searching for a trans soon.

good luck

I remember an earlier post about this.  http://www.hondaaccordforum.com/m_131132/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm

Since you have the same zip and same last name, I am assuming that this is the same engine?

If only the cylinder head was damaged, you can just replace that for less money.  Was the piston and cylinder wall in the engine block damaged as well?

Yes, we are one in the same as the post a while ago.  According to Honda, the head, the piston, and the block are gone.
