I love the Garmin I bought for my wife (I use it occasionally).  I believe it was one of the bottom of the line ones (Nuvi 200 I think).  I bought it brand new for $160 (discounted from $250) on "Black Friday" last year at Best Buy.
I did a thread on it last year but I can't remember what it was titled.  I heard not to get a Tom Tom though.  One member was not very satisfied with his and got rid of it.  I have heard nothing but good things about Garmin.  It is super easy to operate.

My Aunt had a TomTom 3rd edition I believe.  We tried it around the city and it worked just great.  Easy to use as well.  However I had no long term drive with it or anything.

I have a garmin nuvi 200w.  very user friendly.  only had a few issues with it(once was not updated maps, construction had just been done there).  then once i put in to take me to the nearest mcdonalds and it took me to some random persons house. and a few times it will think i'm on a road i'm not(like a interstate i am under or near), this is normally when my car is parked and the unit has been off and i turn it on when i am ready to go

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 660 last summer, and I am very happy with it. They (Garmin) were and still are the highest rated GPS units by Consumer's Reports Magazine. They are a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for...
The current issue of Consumer's Reports happens to have ratings on several GPS units, Garmin, Tom Tom, Magellan, Mio, Harman Kardon, etc.
Best overall pick for the Money:
Garmin Nuvi 660 and 670

Best Buy:
Garmin Nuvi 350 and 260

And no, I do not work for Garmin!

BTW, it was smaglik who said he had issues with his Tom Tom.  Maybe he will provide some details if you ask him.

I didn't know you could change the navigator haha.  that's cool. I'll have to try it.  I love it when you miss a turn or something, or if you know a different route to where you are going and you turn off course - it will say in a disgusted sounding voice: "recalculating"

or dont u love it when it tells u to go straight then make a right and u run into a dead end or a f*ck*n fence and on the other side is the street u need to get to. so when theres no streets lamps and you cant see behind you or in front of you and need to make a uturn and u f*ck*n back up into a telephone pole just to get to the point u need to get to .... yea.. maybe those gps systems should say something in chinese so it screams at me when ur heading into something "sdhfklahsdkhfks!"

What I *HATE* is that we have HUGE highways up here and the service roads are actually named roads (3-4 lanes wide) themselves....

What that means is when I use navigation software (whether it be GPS or Google Maps or whatever) it always tells me to take these "roads" when I tell it to avoid the highway... Like that's any better!?!

I often have to venture off the beaten path by about 2-3 blocks before it finally realizes I'm just not going that way - then it'll recalc and give me a decent path --- but DAMN that's annoying to not know the route before-hand.

Otherwise, it's great!
