I myself don't know enough about the older cars to post a full writeup on how to retrieve the trouble codes from different vehicles but I think it would be a great addition so we could just link to it when people post engine code light problems....

I just thought it would be nice to have a guide showing how to retrieve them from a 86 to a 06 just so we can referance the post when asking people to post the code...

How do I pull my engine codes if I do not have a scanner tool?

for 5th gen (1994-97) short the blue 2 pin connector under dash behind glove box turn ignition on count how many times chk engine light blinks

for 6th gen (1998-2002) and I belive 7th gen (2003-07?) - NOT SURE short pins 8 and 13 on the DLC located on left side of drivers side under dash. This may or may not work (most likely) on the new C.A.N. enabled accords due in '08.

Do one of the following:

a. Go to Autozone (if you live outside of California) and have them read your codes (highly recommended as it's free and you can retreive codes that will not blink on CEL)

or

b. See the instructions below

WARNING!!!: USE AT YOUR OWN RISK AS SHORTING THE WRONG PINS WILL RESULT IN DAMAGED ECU.

a. Find the Data Link Connector (DLC) located under the instrument panel in the driver's side. It is bolted to the kick panel and is gray in color on the 1998 models.
b. Jump terminals 8 and 13 by connecting them with a wire/cable.

../.|==============...|.\
./..|9.10.11.12.13.14.15.16.|...\
/----------------------------------- \
DATA LINK CONNECTOR (DLC)

c. Turn the ignition key to ON and watch the "CHECK ENGINE" light. It will blink the codes. For example:

1 long flash

pause

3 short flashes

results in 13 and that is your Barometric Pressure Sensor

1 short flash = 1.
1 long flash = 10.

If there is no trouble codes, the light will not flash.

61.............P0133,P1149,P1163,64,65............. Primary heated O2 sensor

90.............P1456,P1457........................ ........EVAP control system leak
91.............P0452,P0453........................ ........EVAP fuel tank pressure sensor low/high input

The following codes will not flash since they require a code scanner:

P1607-PCM internal circuit failure
P1705,06,38,39,53,68,73,91-Automatic transaxle failure<-these things are totally useless IMHO as my trans was DEAD and still no codes were thrown

HOW TO CLEAR TROUBLE CODES (after you fix the problem)
a. Remove ignition key
b. Locate fuse panel on passenger's side
c. Remove fuse no. 13 10 seconds, and then place it back in. (this way you will not have to re enter your radio code)

(I pulled this from a FAQ I wrote on another site)

that's exactly what I was talking about... plus if we could get the older years in there it would help... also, just for ease of use changing it from saying 5th gen to the actuall dates would vastly improve readability for a novice. no acronyms. I want to get something together that someone who can't even change their own oil can use...

http://www.troublecodes.net/honda/

if this is what you got in mind, we have it at the DIY section...

on Honda OBD CODES

On 86 -89 accords you need to look at the ECU window and read the codes,, ECU is located under driver seat..

90 -97 you can jump the SC ( service connector ) under the rt side dash, 90-93 it is by the kick panel .. 94-97 , it is below glove box
the SC, in a 2 wire blue plug,, it could be wrapped up in blue tape if never used before ..on 94-97 there is a 3 wires connector DO NOT jump it ...
to get the code jump those 2 wires , turn the key on and read the blinks on the dash

long flash = 10
short flash = 1

so 1 long ,2 shorts = code 12 ........four long ,3 shorts = code 43 etc etc ..
98 and newer i would go to autozone and have them read the code for free.. codes would start with Pfollowed .....and 4 numbers ..

I have a 1991 Accord LX 4dr Auto that I recently bought. I went looking for the Blue connector to retrieve whatever codes but I can't find it around the kickpanel. Is it possible it is inside the panel?

yes it is. sometimes the wiring is inside the rt kick panel.. trust me it is there, also look for a connector wrapped in blue tape ,, if connector has never been used it will be wrapped in blue tape

It was underneath the right side of the glove box the whole time(as mentioned in previous posts). I thought it was a tie rap when I first saw it. I wasn't aware that the connector was so small. No codes anyway. I suppose I'll be making a tranny issue post in the near future. Thanks for the replys. BTW I did search the board first before I posted, I just couldn't find the blasted plug.
