my mechanic told me that the air filters for the aftermarket intakes are bad for your engine cause they dont filter out as much stuff, because it needs more air flow for power.
does it really mess up your engine and stuff?

As long as the wet oil type filters have oil on them, they filter out fine. Stick with a brand name though, like K&N.

**I just happen'd to use an OBX Cold Air Induction Intake System part #127-1601-1
Air Filter is by them also and is made for wet weather also, i think my gain is around 7 to 13 H.P. with their unit..**

There is a specific cleaning formula from AEM for this filter.......I have one too. They warn against using anything else but that may be crappola, I didn't want to chance it myself. It's shown on the video link above that marbro provided. I got mine from Sam@missionspeed.

That guy's mechanic is right about aftermarket air filters.

http://home.usadatanet.net/%7Ejbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm

take a look at all of those charts particularly the ones that how much dirt was allowed to pass through the filter...

Some indeed do allow more dirt to enter but the REAL test is having your oil analyzed. High silicon levels are a sure sign of too much dirt passing through although other things could also cause it. I have seen oil analysis' with K&N cone filters that had LOWER silicon levels than with the OEM paper ones. There are too many variables for a blanket statement that "all aftermarket filters let more dirt through". That just isn't so.

The reason I posted that test was it was controlled so that other factors such as vaccum leaks, etc are not taken into consideration. Some people live in areas where there is a lot more dirt than others, etc too many variables.. if an OEM filter is not properly installed, it is quite possible for the oil to be dirty...

And if any filter isnt properly installed it becomes the same situation. Non oiled cone filters that are generic brand i can definetly believe let in more dirt and etc then stock filters. But you have to look at the fact that you have most stock intakes that let in 1/4th the air as well

the thing that I actually liked about this test (even though I have a REALLY hard time agreeing with it) is that they use a constant amount of airflow and it's not based on intake. The issue I have is that if a stock airfilter catches more dirt then how is it possible that it maintains a higher airflow rating? if it's got more crap plugging it up because it's catching more crap then how is it possible for a K&N that has less crap built up on it to pass through less air than a stock one when they've both been subjected to the same amount of dirt?

Actually the K&N has a higher flow rate until it starts getting restricted then it just start restricting at a very exponential rate type of curve...where as the stock filter is very linear in its ability.

http://home.usadatanet.net/~jbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm

Go down to where it shows inital restriction and you will see that the K&N is the least restrictive side of the chart and the a/c delco is on the other side (most restricive)
