Coke + Mentos. Whats your method?

I''ve only done it a few times and got lucky w/ a few bottles!  Though my friend smashed one off the ground which jacked me in the face after rocketing only four feet...so that didnt feel the best!  The easiest way to put the Mentos in the Coke so it doesnt spill is to chew a Mentos until it just gets soft, then squish it on the inside of the bottle cap (make sure its dry), then stick a new mentos on the chewed one, close it up, and there you go!
We smash the bottle cap down between our legs with the cap farthest under our legs.  Then when the cap breaks it shoots away and works pretty well!  Takes some practice though! 
Our other method is to hold the bottle horizontally and throwing them over our head behind us.
 
We think their is a correlation between how tight the cap is, whether you shake it or not, and how long you wait.
 
Has anyone used any offbrand pop?  We tried using a $1 3 liter from Dollar Tree which would have works but the cap was stronger than the bottle so it broke!

I thought the best soda to use was the diet coke. Havent done it yet, but everytime im in the store and i see the two i want to do it.
