Good question. I believe so. It's kind of a loop hole. I'm not sure if they fixed that yet. Haven't really kept up on gun laws the past few years. I know in calif. they were talking about putting some crazy tax on ammunition and we are only allowed to buy 10 clip magazines for pistols. I remember trying to buy some 15 round clips online and it specifically said on the site they can't ship to calif and other states.
If someone wants to buy a gun here legally, it's really not too hard. Just have to wait a long time and can't always get whats legal in other states. Unlike most states, ccw is near impossible to get too, although in some of the more rural counties it's a bit easier, but I don't happen to live in one.
In the philippines only certain people are allowed to own guns like politicians, police officers, militiary people, and rich people. I remember the last time I was in the philippines my uncle had to hide his guns at my grandmas house.

Your uncle was ghetto fabulous! In Memphis, all the gang members pride themselves on having guns stashed at relatives homes. They do what they do, then clean up and put the gun back in a "legal to own a gun" household.
The System forces criminals to stretch the loopholes-it also forces otherwise law abiding members of the community to aid criminal members of their own families, lest the family members get "caught up" in The System.
A Vicious Cycle perpetrated by our infallible, inept Government.

Would you prefer all firearms to be illegal? I would not and I don't own a gun.

i dont get it.
there are all these laws about carrying a concealed weapon.
does that make it legal to walk around holding it in plain sight?
honda97valdeez

No, that's "brandishing" a weapon.
Guns, in all their forms, are legal to OWN in the U.S.(by certain citizens of the U.S.), not legal to USE, except for a very limited set of circumstances.
Avoid firearms if they are not already in your life.
Seriously.

Post 47 to 56 - Am I not right to feel uncomfortable about your gun laws ? Mind you, there are plenty of illegal weapons here. They probably flooded in from the Balkans.

It is a proven fact that there is less crime in areas where law abiding citizens can carry guns more easily. The criminals fear anyone they try to rob may be "packing." So no, you do not need to feel uncomfortable about our gun laws. Criminals will get guns no matter how illegal they are. that's why they are called criminals.
I love Mississippi's lax gun laws. You only have to wait around 10 days to buy a handgun. Then you go to the gun store and pick it up, and register it in your name. There are no waiting periods for shotguns and rifles. You can go into a gun store and buy one.
To get a concealed carry license, all it takes is for them to run a background check on you and you pay $100 for a one year license.
I own a Springfield Armory 1911 .45 ACP (basically a hand cannon) and a little Ruger 22/45 .22 long rifle handgun. It has a thick bull barrel and it is a real "nail driver."
I also have a Remington 870 12 gauge pump action shotgun that I got when I was about 14 or 15.
I love guns. If I didn't have a new baby, I'd get more. Now that the baby is growing I'm going to have to lock the gun up every day and only unlock it at night time before bed. I keep it in my nightstand in case I have to bust a cap into an intruder's face - I would never shoot a burglar in the leg. With America's crazy lawsuits, he coulp probably sue me if I injured him. He can't sue me if he is dead.

lol, semi-true there 00accord...
i'm not pro nor anti gun rights... i feel that guns help violence, but help avoid violence as well for reasons that 00accord stated...
without guns, i know that violence and crime will not vanquish or diminish any at all...
as the saying goes.. "guns don't kill people.. people kill people..." always have, always will..
if there weren't guns, they'd use knives, or revert to stone age and use sticks or bats.. maybe some might feel adventurous and use a bow and arrow?
the lawsuit line is funny...
my dad who has been anti-gun (he's very conservative) has recently bought 3 pistols and enjoys shooting.. it's funny, because now he's on the other extreme thinking everyone should carry a gun.
also, the laws vary from state to state, so there's inconsistencies everywhere.

Very true on the laws varying from state to state. I forgot to mention: in Mississippi you can keep a handgun concealed in your vehicle (without a concealed Carry license) anywhere in the state other than national parks (AKA The Natchez Trace - I think that is the only place you can't have a gun in your car.) I don't keep a gun in my car though. Too easy for someone to steal it if they broke into my car.
So keep that in mind if you are ever driving through Mississippi and someone makes you mad and you flip them off. I did it once, and I wound up running from some guy in a Mercedes that decided to chase me after I flipped him off cause he was tailgating me. I was in the Mustang though so I burned him at first. Then we got to a stop light, he pulled up behind me and stopped, and I was getting ready to have to get out of my car and whip his @ss if he got out of his. Or I was getting ready to get shot at. But he just sat there. Then he turned the other way and I never saw him again. It was still frickin scary though.

Montana is similar to that, you can carry one in the car, unloaded though, as long as it's in plain site. Concealed weapons permit is fairly easy to get if you have a reason to carry it and no prior violent offenses. My wife doesn't want me to have guns in the house because of the baby which drives me nuts... I carried and slept with one for a year in a combat zone and now not having it makes me feel a bit afraid. So I just keep them at someone elses house. I've got a 3 rifles and a pistol that I use for hunting and target practice. I don't mind more strickt gun laws but if they remove the right completely that's where I draw the line. I don't care if I have to wait xx days to pick it up as long as I have the right to have it.

Same here. I wouldn't care if there was a
one year waiting period. That would probably actually be worse cause I'd pick a gun I wanted and register to buy it, then save slowly for a year.
From what I read recently (although I cannot currently find my source), in Mississippi, it is legal for a gun to be concealed in your vehicle and loaded (unless you are in a national park).

What about fully automatic weapons?
A guy I once knew bought an AK-47, and modded it to be fully auto.. Like an idiot he carried it in his trunk with shells... let's not discuss that part please... we all know that was stupid.
but... I wonder if it's a fed law or state law that it's illegal to have a full-auto weapon?

In some of the rural areas of calif they have open carry laws. As long as the gun is holstered and visible it is legal. I'm sure other states have open carry rules as well.
As for the fully automatic weapons, I know here in calif you can buy a modified m4 which is semi automatic. Apparently it is really easy to demodify so it will go back to full auto. Isn't the fully auto thing a federal law? Brady's bill? I thought it was coming up again and it would either be reinstated or revoked. Anybody know?
I know in florida they made it so out of state people could get ccw licenses. Can't find it right now, but this reduced the amount of tourists who were being robbed.
Calif we can have guns in our cars as long as it is in the trunk and unloaded and separated from the bullets.

The auto/semiauto thing is both state and federal. Whichever is most restrictive is enforced.

I'm sure that I must have some intelligent comments to make but I have been watching Top Gear, Red Dwarf, and Star Trek [2 varieties] while drinking a rather fine bottle of Spanish brandy. Oh bugger, the keyboard is blurred. Buzzcocks is about to start [do you get that ?] so i might as well finish the bottle and pass out. Good night, cousins.

i most likely have one of the most liberal view on gun ownership i know. For these reasons:
#1) the constitution says were allowed to have guns. If it wern't for all the dumb-$* gang members out there i would have no problem legalizing full-auto weapons. im not too worried about our govt. becoming (that) corrupt, but civilan gun ownership is another check and balance within the govt. take that away now, civilans might regret it 40 years from now.
#2) "guns dont kill people, people kill people". you take away guns or make them more restrictive, the only people that have/can carry guns are criminals, cops, and the military. none of which i completely trust.
#3) this might just be me, but if i was ever caught "doin the deed" with a married woman by her husband, i would rather he pop me one right in the skull than have him stab me 15 times with a screwdriver. but thats just me.
#4) the anti-semi/full automatic gun ban was introduced in the '20s to stop the stereotypical tommy-gun wielding '20s gangster. It doesnt have much bearing with todays society. i think full/semi automatic guns should be heavily restricted, but not illegal.
also, @LX5sp: your 7 times more likely to shoot your own family member than shoot an intruder if you have a gun readily available to shoot intruders. if (when) I own a gun, ill keep it either in a lock box somewhere safe out of my house, or in a not-so-obvious-to-be-a-gun-safe safe in the basement. most likely the 2nd.

Awake, sober, no hangover. Weird, the keyboard is sharp and clear again.
"Buzzcocks" where to start ? Full prog name is "Never mind the Buzzcocks" named after a Brit band from the Sex Pistols era but far superior to those talentless riff-raff. It is a sort of quiz about pop but absolutely vicious to the pretentious guests and the performers featured. Two pro-comedians as team captains. It is p...-your-pants funny. You must start a campaign to get it over there, you wont regret it I promise.
Just discovered that some bugger drank my bottle of brandy last night !

Two news items you could help me with in my ignorance .
1. These primaries - what's that all about ? Hilary Clinton ? A word of caution from your wise old uncle. We had a female Prime Minister a while back and she ensured that it will be a long time before we have another. She had her nice little war [Falklands] and butchered Northern England [ famous for me ! ] which has always supported the opposition. Anyone can get elected in the North if they stand as Socialist. Recently, a coastal town a few miles further down the coast held an election for a mayor. A monkey was elected [explanation : the local football team had a monkey [guy in a suit] as team mascot and he ran around the field and made a general arse of himself. Why a monkey I hear you ask. Prepare yourself for some Northern folklore which may be truth [ I would like it to be ! ]
" The Day We Hung The Monkey"
During the Napoleonic Wars against France, a ship was wrecked off the coast of Hartlepool. The only survivor who struggled to shore was a pet monkey. The peasants had never seen a monkey before and obviously couldn't understand it's frightened chatter. They decided it was speaking French even though they had never heard French being spoken before. They then decided that it must be a French spy. In due course, a trial was held, the monkey was found guilty, and sentenced to death by hanging.
How about that, then ?
The second news item was that the UK standard of living will be higher than yours by summer. Now my standard of living is not noticably higher so I assume that yours must be getting lower. True ? In which case, what's going on ?

That's why I keep a flashlight next to the gun. I would never shoot at anything unless I knew EXACTLY what it was. I guess that is just something they teach us southern boys when we were growing up with guns as youngsters. I bet that 7x more likely figure is based more on the un-gun-safety-trained yankees in the north. No experienced redneck would ever shoot at anything unless he knew what it was. Most of the time when you hear about those "hunting accidents" where someone was shot - it involves either a woman who has only been hunting a few times and is trigger happy, some kid who has only been hunting a few times and is trigger happy, or some guy from up north who has only been hunting a few times and is trigger happy. Don't even get me started on Dick Cheney.
What in the crap is the point of keeping a gun in the house if you can't use it iif someone breaks in? You would look pretty smart if an intruder broke in and killed you while you were attempting to open your safe. or while you were telling him to hold still while you loaded your gun.

I am not at all for Hillary. That woman is insane.

Not sure how "Standard of Living" is measured. I think it is an artificial concept dreamed up by those pseudo-scientists, economists. It's something to do with excess available income over expenditure.
