excess consumption of everclear can not only cause sever alchol poisoning but I have heard that if you drink it in excess then get up the next morning and drink vast amounts of water it actually forces more of it into your bloodstream and can get you REALLY trashed again. It can cause anything from death to blindness when over consumed.... not to mention when it's mixed with something you can BARELY taste it

do you know where "proof" of alcohol originally came from ? Middle ages there was a tax on beer according to strength. the strength was determined on the liquor before it was fermented. The Royal Tax inspectors went to breweries equipped with a pair of leather shorts. They would pour the liquor onto a wooden bench and sit on it. The proof was then determined by how long it took for them to stick to the bench. The quicker they stuck, the stronger the liquor [more sugars], so the higher the taxes. this was the proof of the liquor. This is not a made-up story.
At one time I was Dispensary manager in a large pharmaceutical company and I dispensed bulk materials to the manaufacturing units. This included pure 100% grain spirit - straight ethanol, no water whatsoever. Believe me that did not taste very smooth [secret !! it tasted very tasty with orange juice added]
Hehe...I read that proof was originally defined as the most dilute spirit which would sustain combustion of gunpowder. here's the wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proof_%28alcohol%29 I never said all moonshine was smooth, I said if the guy who made it knew what he was doing it would be. I have also had both varieties. The best kind you think must not really be that strong....until it hits you and you are lying on the ground, trying to hold on to the grass so you don't fall off the earth.
The pic you showed of Everclear is also sold in Mississippi. It tasts like you are drinking molten lava - terrible.
It is basically only used for "hunch punch" made a frat parties for the girls to drink. I am sure it has caused numerous alcohol poisoning deaths. But if you think about it, so has any other alcohol out there that people drink too much of.

I've only had everclear a couple of times and both times I didn't feel that drunk until I tried to walk or something.... MASSIVE creeper effect on me, it's like I feel sober for quite a while then next thing I know I wake up...

Cars, Guns and now this?!?!?!!?

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!
On a traitorous note, I just last week bought a bottle of
Chivas Brothers Sapphire Flagon Royal Salute 21 year blended scotch for my old man's birthday present. He hasn't received it via fedex yet, so I am on pins and needles that they don't break it.
I tried the JW with the man who owns the liqour store I frequent, and I did not like it very much. Not for 2 bills anyhoo. The Chivas was $190 +tax, and seemed smoother to me tho.
I own a distillation column, and temper corn liqour to 110 proof. It ain't the strongest, but it ain't a woman's drink neither. (triple negative!!) 199.99% is attainable, but it requires use of osmotic filtration to scrub the water from the last 2% on down.
When I drink red likker, I like Jack Daniels; but clear and neat is the way to go IMO.
Purity of ingredients, skill, patience and a willingness to put forth a lot of effort makes for the best liqour on earth.
It is
all poison in course of fact, however we may rationalize our actions. Everything in moderation, including moderation.

Gawd almighty ! What legitimate reason can a company have for selling that stuff ?
That would be a nightmare in UK. We have a major problem with under-age drinking anyway especially with things called alcopops which are specifically targeted by unscrupulous companies. They of course twist and try to avoid responsibility but continue to sell them anyway. They have been banned from advertising on tv. That stuff must go down well with the derelicts, sold in brown paper bags no doubt.
Available off the shelf here. It is made/marketed for young folks that know no better....but soon will from the morning after. I must admit I had more than my share back in those days. Today it would stop my heart cold and leave me in the street......face down.

I think the "proof" thing is the other way round. Your version I think is how gunpowder is proved. I could have invented the whole thing of course. Wouldn't you rather believe my version ?

Well, mornin all. Today is one of those days when I wish I lived somewhere else. texas - you will laugh at this - Its so foggy, I cant see my feet and, to make matters worse, the fog is coming off the North Sea so it is as cold as a witch's tit or should I say ta ta. I am supposed to take a photo of my car [dont know why but wilco] Was going to wash it as it is plastered in Moor mud but I thought if they cant take a joke they should get out of the kitchen [I seem to have mixed a saying or two there] To make matters worse, I am on duty this weekend in the Dales Park [duty - I am a volunteer ranger in the park just like Ranger Smith in Jellystone]
So, tramping across foggy, wet, cold moors trying to locate some stiles and bridges I am supposed to survey - not quite my idea of heaven on earth [ tee hee - might spend the day in the Tan Hill pub instead - although even getting to there will be an adventure as I think there is snow up there too]
So, Texas, if you tell me that it is 70 degrees in southern Texas, I will sacrifice a sheep to the Norse gods and call down a curse on you.
Reading back over yesterday's posts, i think I over-reacted to Everclear but it still sounds horrific.
Still, the weather is very bracing and character forming - just what made Britain great. The poor man's version of a cold shower.

What do you pack your column with ? Best stuff is broken house bricks [cleaned of course]. This give you good fractionation. here's another idea - contact a laboratory supply dealer and ask about Aldershaw columns. I did not suggest this, I was never here.

still learning how to use HAF so just noticed photo gallery and cracked it open. My Accord looks nothing like yours and I'm not just talking about the fact that yours is bright and shiny while mine is muddy and scruffy ALWAYS. They dont seem to be the same car. The first post I put up was asking about differences and now I see it. Mine is much lower on the bonnet line and much higher on the boot - its just a different car. I would like to do shots of it today but weather is grim - rain, fog, the usual. Photo from my window was taken last November. Going to try to get car posted quickly as I would like collective opinion on "What am I driving ?"
I know engine is F20ZE and it is UK built.

The Accords here are built specifically for the US market. The current model Accord in the UK is known as an Acura TSX here. The TSX (to us) is the Accord that the rest of the world sees.
Different engines are offered in different countries as well so it can be one big confusing mess.

Will you take a picture of the engine too? I am interested to see what the F20Z looks like.
That's a heck of a view there. Is that a golf course I see?

I want to try it so bad. We don't yet get the real stuff in Mississippi. I saw some at the liquor store, but before I spend $35 on it I looked it up on the internet and it's not the real thing (not aged in wormwood barrels - what gives it its supposed hallucinogenic powers.) They need to hurry up and get it here. Maybe I'll see if I can order some on the internet.
If I lived in California, I would have tried it already!

Agreed .... nice view
Valdeez: The picture was online. It's not my bam wear; probably a real life bum!!! .... but you'd have to be pretty dumb to try that stuff straight! Note to self: Anything that can clean an engine really quickly will burn if you drink it!!!
I'd bet that F20 would be a heck of a platform to turbo! It probably has little stubby connecting rods that can take 4 times the engine's native power.
For an update on me, I can drive a manual today! So Jon ...... about that race

Is the Cali stuff the real thing? You can order it online internationally for about $80-120. My cousin brought a bottle back from Amsterdam. It's really strong .... like 160 proof and you go through buzzed, drunk, comming down, hung over and better in like 4 hours from 1 3-shot cocktail. It taste like black liquorice, which I'm not too fond of. I didn't get the halucinations, but I think 2 or 3 of those cocktails would do it!!!

Hey academic, I remember a while back another guy from the UK was astounded that anyone in the U.S with a regular driver's license can drive a manual trans car with no special type of license. He said over there you have to have a specific license to drive a manual trans car.
