I'd like to upgrade my factory speakers with aftermarket good stuff. Should I be able to buy component speakers for the front and have the tweeters fit in the stock spot or would I need to do some sort of modification to the stock area?

Please post your year/model/trim/engine in your sig. If your car has tweeters already you should be able to replace them, if not I don't believe it's too hard to install them into the door panel.

not all tweeters fit. I custom mounted mine to the back of the grille.

So what would be involved in putting aftermarket tweeters there? Does one brand work/fit better than any others? I get the feeling this might be a totally custom deal depending on which brand I go with.

if you go to
www.crutchfield.com, then click out "outfit my car" it will tell you all the speakers that can fit in your factory locations. As far as brands go, i would suggest spending the extra money and getting a name brand such as Infinity, Polk, Memphis (there are many others). Its all about the sound that you like. Just don't waste your money on junky ones, you just wont be happy in the end.
I honestly dont know what is involved in installing in the dash location. I have an 05 and i replaced the speakers in the doors and rear deck myself, but i left the tweeters alone. I would only suggest going about the tweeter replacement if you really want to, and are an audiophile. I didnt think it would be worth it for my tastes. You might be better off keeping the factory tweeters and getting a nice 2 way 5.25's for the doors.

Yes, your factory tweeters will still work, you honestly cant even tell they are there in the first place.

if your looking for great quality stuff, get a set of speakers, tweeters, and crossovers. The crossovers split the sound coming in towards the speakers specifically for those speakers and those tweeters. getting different speakers (although they sound fine) isnt necissarily optimal, and it doesnt broadcast all different levels at the same amount.
I say either get the stock pioneer speakers (at least mine came stock with pioneer's... idk about yours) or get an entire set of speakers, tweenters, and xovers.

i installed rainbow CMX kick comps in my 03. search my threads. in one of them i explained in detail how to do a component install with new wireing. wireing through drivers door was a challenge, but i figured out a way :) not sure if i metioned what i did with the tweets, but inshort i simply removed the stocks, cut out the plastic holding them, then hot glued the new tweets in place.

well i added 4 aftermarket tweeters to my system..
just wired it straight into the harness..
but a good place to really hide them besides drilling a hole into your door panel,
in the center console above the factory stereo are two a/c vents.
remove the vents and drill the tweeters into thur..
thats wat i did and its sounds great.
