Painting Engine Cover: Color?

I am going to paint my two plastic engine covers to match my ext color but mask off the i-VTEC sticker and leave the three lines on each piece black.

I was wanting to see if you guys would do 3 things for me.

1) recommend which color of Krylon Fusion (link is at bottom) that would best match my ext color of desert mist metallic (you can see a little of this color on the strut tower in the pic).

I was thinking River Rock, but I could always use the Fusion as a primer(because of how well it bonds to plastic) then apply another, better-matching paint. I would love it if any of the part store here carried a small touchup can of my OE color, but they don't. The color doesnt have to be exact either.

2) recommend a completely different/better paint process to use in painting these. including different colors, different paints ect and possibly ease my mind of worrying about heat from the engine.

3) not flame me for having such a long post.

EDIT: I couldnt get 'Krylon Fusion' to stay linked when I posted, so here's the link.

I don't know much about the krylon fusion, is it a high temp paint?  I personally have used high temp rust-oleum (on a BBQ) in the past with pretty good results.  I would try to give you some suggestions on paint matching but I know how much difference there is in the appearance of colors from one monitor to the next so I can't give you any ideas there.  Have you looked online for the places that color match for you?  Why not have lowes color match your car?

Here's some paint that a guy at my work is using to restore an old truck, you just brush it on and it self levels (no marks!).... SWEET stuff, rock solid, rustproof

Is Fusion high temp? No. I have used this fusion on plastics before and it sticks like no other.
I fabbed a console piece out of plexi to go around the shifter in my Camaro; a friend saw it after I'd painted it w/ Fusion and he thought I had a piece of metal powdercoated. Its cool stuff.
However I thought about HiTemp stuff being safer in that kind of heat, but it probably won't bond as well as Fusion would.
Im not real sure what to do. This is more than likely a dumb question, but... can Lowe's mix up aerosol cans? If they mixed it in a regular can I would need a sprayer and compressor which my father jacked both of from me this summer.

btw that pro15 looks like good stuff. im just a up front buyer i dont buy much online anymore.

If you were painting the actual valve cover I would use high temp paint, but it just plastic trim. If the plastic doesn't get ruined by the heat I doubt the paint will.

those plastics can take a lot of heat.... I guess you could always try it and then fix it if it flakes off

is flaking the worst that would happen under high temps?

I painted the head shield that covers the manifold in my car and used high temp spray paint.  Worked fine, and no fires!  I think the paint I used was for grilling?  I forget.  Got it at Lowes.

Just go to Auto Zone or Advance and get some high temp paint. I think it stands up to 1200 degrees. I've used it on friends cars and it holds nicely on valve covers, heat shields, etc.

DO NOT USE THE KRYLON FUSION CRAP

I just tried it out on my cover, and now im probly going to have to flake it all off, it sticks like crap. it just kind of runs off......In my humble opinion, do not use it.

soory man, i hope you didnt use it because of my bragging on it. like i said i had really good results with it. as a precaution i sprayed like 5 super-light coats.

i gues that rules out fusion. im thinking a hightemp primer followed by my color of choice then a hightemp clearcoat (if they make such a thing).

according to advance auto's site, Duplicolor Plastic Primer: Adhesion Promoter; Clear; Aerosol.
the site gives a description:  Help protect against weather conditions and corrosion with Dupli-Color® Adhesion Promoter. It improves adhesion on all paints and acts like a clear primer. Ideal for interior and exterior surfaces, like plastic, chrome or other metal surfaces.
I'ma give this a shot.

Joseph, hows yours lookin?

What did you prep/clean the surface with?
Joseph

some foamy stuff and a lintfree towel

The bottle said there was no prep other then to clean.

i guess lol. is that plate inside of the plastics metal? if so, are those lines and the "v6.." raised? if so that would look sweet painted then polish off the paint on the raised areas.

i think i will do a primer then a few light coats of gold. ill have to think about it.

yeah the plate is seperate, but its too shitty to try and polish, its all caroded.
Im just going to see if i can go to a junk yard find a whole new one, take it to a body shop and have it painted.

ive seen a wire wheel do amazing stuff to some really shitty/corroded stuff. unless its so corroded that the integrity of the piece is questionable (such as holes or deep pitting). i really doubt you could find anything at a junkyard in much better condition than yours.
yours a lot different than mine and i cant really tell from the pics, but how hard would it be to fab a piece from scratch? maybe some diamond plate, or something else if thats not your taste.

looks like it wouldnt be difficult to mock sumthing up, as the center piece appears flat with only 4 holes for bolts.

BUT if underneath this piece, theres some function that i dont know about and it has other uses than just display/ protection, then disregard my above statement.

Alright, help is here with your "running" problem.  No matter what a paint says about it sticking to plastic you must always prep first!  And by prep I mean more than clean it.  You HAVE to scuff the surface.  Especially since those engine covers are treated for stuff NOT to stick to them (like enging gunk)  Just take some 150-300 grit sand paper and go over it lightly.  Just hazing it really.  Then clean it with a prepping cleaner, or rubbing alcohol works awesome!  If you're doing metal, use mineral spirits. Then primer!!!!! PRIMER PRIMER PRIMER!!!!!

After that, lighter coats are better coats!

Some other information: I worked at Home Depot as the Paint Department Supervisor and a) Krylon Fusion blows b) It can't be mixed to custom colors c) You would have an easier time using a model paint as you can get those in thousands of colors, including metallics, and most are car color coded already.  And those are meant to stick to plastic, but you STILL primer.  I know its a kids hobby but I still put models together and you HAVE to primer.  Its the not so well known must-have step.

P.S. Don't use fusion!  Get a touch up paint that's close, your car looks to be close in color to the Saturn color called Champagne, but just browse your local car parts store that sells auto paints.
