RPM'S

I have a 1996 Honda Accord V6.  I have recently noticed that at cruising speeds my RPM meter is all over the place.  Now it happens just about every time I get into the car.  I have replaced plugs/cables, new cap and rotor.  Since I have had the Engine light come on, but it turned out to be the EGR valve which I have replaced.  Has anyone experienced there RPM meter dance all over the place, occasionally I do feel the car jerk, but not often.  Any help is welcomed and I Thankyou in advance.

Is it just the meter, or do the RPMs go along with it?  It's hard to tell from your post.

Its just the METER.

Read this thread and see if you think we are suffering from the same problem. 
Looks like two of the forum experts think it could be the ignition coil on mine so I am going to go buy a VOM and test it out.
Have you pulled the Check Engine Light codes?

The ignition coil is a common cause of that problem on a v6. There's a resister in the coil that the tach is driven through, they tend to crap out.

OK...now 3 of the forum experts say it is probably the ignition coil!  I am sure that is probably the problem on both of our cars.  I'm going to try to find a VOM tomorrow and also check out the prices on ignition coils.

i agree with 00accordlx5spd. i've heard the same thing a few times. it must be that, otherwise, u'll have to buy a new cluster, which is not so cheap.

Kevin, you've got a 2000 4-cyl, right?
 
I think your tachometer signal comes from the ECU, like it does on my '98 4-cyl.  Some cars the tach signal comes from the ignitor (not the coil), but apparently on the V-6 it comes from the coil.
