id start with head unit, maybe $200, then subs and amp, $500 for both, then comps,$200-300. Anyway, thats what i'd do.

beacause you have a 7th gen id do either new speakers or a sub and amp combo

i have the same budget, as well as a rockford-fosgate x400.4 amp (4x50rms)...and here is what I am doing...

1. Ordered replacement speakers from crutchfield.  Went with Polks for the rear and Sony's for the front.  Wasn't too high on the sonys, but they had good reviews.  I dont like them, i'll return them and get polks for the front too.

2. After installing the speakers, if I dont like the sound (some speakers needto be driven harder tosound good), I'll install the 4ch amp.  It has high level inputs.

3.  Likely after doing this, it wont have enough bass, so I'll install a sub (1 12") and drive it off half the amp, using the other half for the mids.  I'll lose my balance, but, i can deal with that.

4.  If it still lacks sound quality, then I will look into a jl cleansweep, but those will eat the budget really fast, so it is a final step.

^ u should run 2 amps

haha.

that's what the guy at the audio shop told me.  then he proceeded to write me an estimate for all memphis audio equip...totalled out at 2000.

i ran the identical setup in my 94 accord, except i had an aftermarket head unit, and i loved it.

Aside from having more power all around, and control of the sub, why should i run two amps?

well u just said it. also there wouldn't be so much on one amp and could help it last longer. also better sound quality unless u plan on running crossovers from the one amp. and the price for memphis is 2 much.                                                     also to the guy who started the thread go on crutchfeild and find things you like and are able to fit and then go on ebay and try to get them at a cheaper price.

in your opinion, what would i need to spend on an amp / sub package?  not looking for much.  and only want one sub.

depends on sub size/type "sq or spl" and the power your wanting out of an amp.

what is sq or spl?
they are factor u consider when looking for a sub. subs that are mostly for sq are the one's that drop real low and have deep bass while sub spl based get loud. for ex: kicker L5/L7 subs are said to be spl subs

SQ is sound quality.  This would be for the most accurate reproduction of music.

SPL is sound pressure level.  This is for being really loud.  SPL subs are generally massive and can handle a ton of power.
