At last, the Messiah has returned ! Keegan is in charge of Newcastle United with Shearer as his second in command. Along with Keane in charge at Sunderland ! The armies of the Geordie Republic will soon burst through the frontier, trample Manchester underfoot, and go on to rule the world. Of course, this world conquest will be put on hold when Sunderland play Newcastle - the armies will both return home and try to destroy the true enemies.
Still. Viva Keegan ! Viva Shearer ! Viva Keane ! Long live the glorious fighters of the Geordie Nation !
American football ? A game for children !

Sorry, I must have had too much sugar this morning.

You are right, that is lost on us. Your football, known as soccer here, is relegated to after school games for children. It does not have the following here that it does in Europe but is slowly gaining in popularity. Will it ever replace American football replete with 300lb bruisers? Uh, no.

Please do not use the S word and for "Europe" read the "World" [except US of course.] I suppose we could introduce a civilised game like Cricket to replace Rounders as played by sub-teen girls. What is you call it ? Ah yes -Baseball or that other girl's game Netball, sorry Basketball.
I think this is a rich vein of mutual mickey-taking.

YES! I agree completely with academic! I hate how everyone thinks soccer, excuse me, football is a sissy sport. I challenge everyone to go out and play a full game sometime. 90 minutes of full on sprinting and no pads. The sport is f--king brutal. It's nothing like American sports where a whistle is blown every 10 seconds so the fatties can catch their breath and adjust their full body padding.

Football is amazing.  I love the continuous flow of the game.  Not like amer. football where it stops every so many seconds and baseball.  The ability to play a 90 min game just amazes me.  I read somewhere a while ago that the avg footballer runs 5 miles during a game.

I haven't been following football at all =(.  I'm missing out on champions league.  Last I watched was the womens copa mundial and USA disappointed lol.  Oh I did watch becks when he first played for galaxy.  What do you think of becks coming to usa?

The end of his career as a serious player. He will still make his 100th captaincy of England but only as a PR stunt. We all know who rules that household.

i used to play soccer so i would watch american soccer occasionally.

Football is OK, i usually only watch the last few games in the playoffs though. Speaking of, anyone waiting to see the giants get creamed by the pack?

The thing that's missing in soccer is that you can't blow through a 320 lb. offensive tackle, shed the fullback and run right over the quarterback like you can in American football ....... also, in the states, both sports are played in the fall (High School teams anyway).  I think the last point is what leads to the American views on our football vs. soccer.  I think both are great sports, but pigskin is for me.  I've always been more into strength and technique rather than finesse, accuracy or (body motion) speed sports.

Football, wrestling, CQC, skiing, snowboarding, SCUBA, rock climbing, hiking, etc. are the sports for me.

Soon to come:  Surfing, Wind Surfing, Rap Jumping, Sky diving, Wakeboarding, Water Skiing, Hang Gliding

I wasn't knocking soccer (or Euro Football) just trying to explain to someone from another country where it is in our lineup of sports.....in short it's hardly on the map. I'm not a big sports fan at all so none of them matter to me in the least. Play and enjoy whatever suits you.

I used to play futbol (soccer) and I loved it, unfortunately I don't have the lung capacity for it. But as for the running, jumping, put your whole body into, thats my kinda game. As for our football, never was a fan of it, can't stand to watch it, in person or on tv. Baseball is my sport of choice.

For the record, I cannot stand professional sports, atleast football and baseball. It's too refined to where the players are just masses of muscle being paid millions of dollars to do what millions of kids like to do on the weekends with their friends.

Some minor league or college sports is about the extent of what I can stand to watch on tv. I for one, would be much happier playing the sport than being a spectator of it.

in all honesty the only reason I think that so many americans watch the american football super bowl is because the commercials are so funny.  In the states here when the super bowl (U.S. version of the world cup...)  is on people pay literally millions for a 30 second commercial spot.  These commercials are almost always brand new and a number of them are fricken hysterical so believe it or not even if people here don't like the sport we use it as an excuse to watch commercials and drink beer... *L*

I don't need an excuse but having one makes it easier for me to explain to my wife why I'm drunk.... *L*
