I just purchased a 08 accord EXL v6 coupe, and was just wondering what RPM the v-tech kicks in? I floored it a few times to 65-70 but I cant really make out when its kicking in...

VTEC stands for Variable Timing Electronic Control ..... the one with the H is the phone. The reason that you don't feel it kick in is because your engine has VTC in addition to the VTEC cam. This means that the intake camshaft rotates in relation to the engine to provide a smoother boost in power, aka it doesn't kick in rather it adjusts as the rpms climb.

Yeah I just noticed I threw the H in there...my bad
So will I actually hear the v-tec kick in? Or will I not hear anything? Like my buddy's prelude you can cleary hear at about 5000RPM's his vtec kick in

You won't hear anything but perhaps that the engine is a bit deeper and throatier. The older B, D, & H series engines didn't have the intermediary controls so you hear them. My 2000 AV6 had the 2 stage control as well and it was definately noticable when VTEC would engage. The newer systems you don't feel an engagement.

Maybe your buddy's Prelude had a 2-stage intake manifold that opens up the secondaries at 5k. That's much easier to hear, and lotsa people think it's the VTEC cross-over.

The reason you can hear the VTEC in your buddy's prelude is because it is DOHC. VTEC does not kick in at a specific RPM on our cars as Falkore said. i kind of doubt it does on Preludes either. i wouldn't be surprised if the sound you hear on your friend's prelude is not in fact the VTEC "kicking in." It probably gets louder because it is reaching the peak of its power band. If your buddy is so convinced his really "kicks in" at 5k rpm and is not just saying that because that is what he has been told by others, do a search for "VTEC indicator light" on this forum and follow the link I posted. Your buddy should be able to rig his own light in his prelude for under $20 and that tells him FOR SURE when VTEC engages. I bet he would be surprised....

Thanks for the info....I'm kinda new at all this....I'm just saying when I'm in his car and his pushes it you can hear the engine get alot louder when his rpms hit around 5k...same thing when my other friend had his rsx type s....it would hit 5k and you would really be able to hear the v-tec kick in

I still doubt it "kicks in" at that high of an RPM. if that were true, the whole VTEC system would basically be pointless for someone other than a racecar driver. i rarely ever take my Accord up to 5k RPM. VTEC engages on accords anywhere beginning at 2,200 RPM as per the video the guy posted on the "VTEC indicator light" thread I posted:
http://www.hondaaccordforum.com/m_61725/tm.htm There are also complete instructions on there showing how to DIY.

actually guys big league is right, on the prelude(H22) VTEC engages at 4900rpm. Its later in the Prelude than the Accord because the Preludes VTEC is actually ment to make power and not just increase gas mileage. And because the Prelude redlines at 7200rpm instead of the Accords 6250 or whatever it is.

My old Integra GSR had the 2-stage intake manifold, and when the secondaries ("IAB") opened up that was pretty easy to hear. With an 8k redline you have enough room to take advantage of that. I think the secondaries opened at 5400 or something like that.
The VTEC crossover point was a lot more subtle. You feel that more in terms of discontinuity in power, but not so much a difference in sound.
Some Prelude H-engines have pretty much the same manifold, but I don't know which years/versions of Prelude have that IAB manifold.

i know the 97+ ones have secondaires, and maybe the 92-96

Jon: When was the last time you listened to my 0-60 video. You most definately could hear VTEC on my accord. I agree that a lot of people think that other things are it, but on mine, I had the V-AFC and you could hear the change at the exact instant that the VTEC indicator went from green to red.
For the 7th Gen they changed the VTEC system to add the intermediary stage.

OK I stand corrected. hehe I'd still like to see a vid of a VTEC indicator light on a prelude though

. Although I do have to admit, a VTEC indicator light is extremely
Falkore your's had VAFC and possible every bolt on known to man with some added custom mods. I wouldn't be surprised if you could hear VTEC on yours. On a stock V6 Accord though - I doubt it.

LOL .... the only things that I didn't have on there were forced induction and nitrous. ..... anything else wasn't made for the car, like an ignition upgrade. I could've also done a little better than the VAFC, but not for the price.

Go to the forum "Appearences". One of the newer posts is about a guy who got a VTEC light. It lights up whenever your VTEC kicks in. He has a few vids of it. I think its pretty cool and easy to install. You might want to check that out.

LOL, thanks .... the taillights & VAFC are all that I still have from it. Unfortunately, I didn't keep the headlights to swap out, the Intake or exhaust. Also, I stripped it in 1 day, which didn't leave enough time to swap parts onto my brother's CL.
The other electronics I still have for the Scion, but I have to find the time and a nice day to do some work on that.
