It's the total of the amount of space in the cylinders. So a 2.2L engine can basically hold 2.2L of air in the cylinders...

It used to be expressed in cubic inches but the world has gone metric. It's not exact either, for instance; a 5.0L engine encompasses both a 302ci and a 305 ci. A chevy 5.7L can be a 348-350 but a Ford 352 was a 5.8L. Fudgies are allowed also.......the Honda 2.4L is less than 2400cc's but they are allowed to round up. Seems like it displaces 2354 cc's (or so) but it's rounded up to 2.4.....common in the auto arena.

Here is a tremendous on-line conversion site where you can convert just about anything to just about anything else:
http://www.onlineconversion.com/ If you look near the bottom of the first page and select "volume", you will soon find out that 1 liter (1000 ml, or 1000 cc) = 61.023744095 cubic inches - approximately!

Yeah...but the 7th V6 is pretty close...I think its 2998 cc (or something like that) and it's rated at 3.0L
