You can check the car out on carfax and if it's not in there I would be cautious if you already suspect this has been done..

you can also try checking with the DMV to see if they have an inconsistant odo history

both ideas are fine and dandy unless of course the person has owned the car for many years without any transactions ........

they can roll back ( replace the speedometer/odometer with one with lesser miles ) as many miles as they please ,not going below the last title transfer and no one would know ..
I have seen a few shady used car lots do that ..
One of them used to be our customer and a few year before they sold the car , well few years later this personwas planning on buying it from a used car lot, and wanted a buyer's chk out before they purchased it ...

well upon checking the vin # ( records on out computer ) the car had less miles that the last time we had worked on it...

My guess is that this can't be done to the digital odometers right?

They could still swap one from a lesser milage car.
