Default stock speakers cut out at certain volume?

This is my wife's 1994 Accord and she's had it about two years now. There was an aftermarket hu in it that was fine unless it was damp or raining out. Then there would be terrible static through the speakers until no sound at all. Eventually no sound ever, even though the radio was getting power.

Just purchased a new JVC hu at Circuit City (the one that came with the car was a cheap no-name). Hooked it up with the correct wiring harnesses, and now the speakers just cut out after a certain volume, like above 14.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to try to solve this? I do not want to spend anymore $$ on aftermarket speakers. My wife hardly listens while driving, but started carpooling and wants to have music for the ride, like in the background. The volume is pretty low when it cuts out now.

Do the stock speakers have another component somewhere that is causing them to cut out? Any suggestions would be greatly apperciated!

It seems that the stock speaker wiring has a short somewhere. If I were you, I'd rewire the entire stereo.

Thanks for the reply! I ended up replacing the speakers all around with some "outlet sale" speakers at Circuit City for $26/pair. Sure enough, the rear passenger is not working. I may just end up rewiring that side to get that speaker going. Don't really want to invest too much more time or $ ($200 already) as this is the wife's car and she really couldn't care less about the setup other than that you can hear it! (Although the JVC hu I purchased has the ability to add on a Blue Tooth module for hands free calling. That might actually be pretty neat and worth the $. I have SYNC in my ride and it is pretty cool...) The cheap-o 6.5" Jensen's actually sound decent enough surprisingly!

The problem is that if there is a short, you are going to eventually kill the channel on the new HU. Speaker wiring is surprisingly easy once you take the trim panels off. The hardest part is getting the wires through the rubber sleeve in the front doors.
