1993 GAS smell in car

Exclamation 1993 GAS smell in car

My 1993 has a gas smell in the cabin. I looked under the hood and did smell some gas but could not locate the source. I touched everything I could but could not find anything wet with gas. I read in my Haynes manual that there is something called the EVAP...... but I am not sure what this is or how to check it. I can probably fix what ever the problem is but I still cannot find the source of the gas smell. Any ideas??

Gas will evaporate quickly from your engine if it is leaking gas. I would look at the fuel rail, and the injectors. The injectors have o-rings on the top and bottom that can leak.

When the engine is cold, turn the key to the II position. Once the check engine light turns off, turn the key off, and turn it to the II position again. Repeat several times. This will pressurize the fuel rail and injectors and maybe help you find the location of the leak.

From the bottom there is a bundle of lines running down the center of the car lengthwise that rot out. It has brake and fuel lines. You may want to check there. My 95 Accord both brake lines rotted out and from the dealer they sold the pieces separate which came to over five hundred If I replaced them all which would have been three fuel ,two bake lines and a lot other pieces. I ended up cutting off the old lines (about 80% of the length was bad) installing fitting and double flaring the ends then installing universal lines cut to length. Not as good as OEM.

PA, That is a good place to start. I will try that this morning when the engine is really cold. If the orings are leaking are they easy or difficult to change? I am guessing they are easy but I don't know.

kris, is the area you are suggesting to look from under the car? I can jack it up and look there also. This car runs so great I just don't want it to go up in flames or hurt anyone.

I think I found it!!!! I used the PA Honda method and I saw the gas coming out from where the fuel rail connects to the top of the injector. I believe there is an oring and something called a cushion ring. How hard or easy are they to change?? I would assume that at a minimum I should change all of those top orings at one time correct??

Parts 27 and 3 should be replaced. Maybe 2 and 4.

Its not hard to do. Unbolt then remove fuel rail, replace o-rings and lubricate them with some engine oil. Take your time when you put on the fuel rail. Line up each injector with the hole in the rail before you force the rail back down.

If you don't, then you will tear the new o-ring (guess how I know?)

me too!

I would normally get Honda parts but none of the dealers had them so I got an oring set from Advance Auto for $10.99 per injector. It came with parts 27,3,2 and 4. I was able to replace them all with no trouble at all. There was a bunch of carbon soot on the outside of the injectors and down in the hole. I used Q-tips and some brake cleaner to get this area as clean as I could. I cleaned off the outside of the injector and the car runs the same way it did before (good power and as smooth as these cars normally do) but without any gas leaking. There is no smell of gas in the cabin.

I was thinking the line bundle rotting may be related to states that use salt in the winter.

Most definitely. Here in Charlotte, NC they use salt but it is so infrequently because they are slack and don't do their jobs that they never get it out.

I have driven the car a little and so far so good, no leaking gas! One of the fuel injectors had a little groove on the plastic on the end of it though. I don't know how that happened but even with that the car runs well. I don't want to replace an injector unless it is dead as they are so expensive.
