1999 Accord - Duplicate Key
Hi,
I lost my spare key to my 1999 Accord EX Sedan. Does anyone know how and where can I get a copy made? Someone told me it has to be at the dealer. Is that true? Any idea how much it costs at the dealer?
thanks

I just went thru that problem, and yes i had to load on car hauler and take to local dealership. They had to program the ecu to the keys. The bummer was i had just purchased the car with only 2 keys cut by dealership, had them programmed only to find out when i got hom e and pulled my OBD codes that I had internal failure in that ecu. Had to do all over when replaced ecu. Oh and helpful note, if you purchase your ecu used make sure you have the proper VIN # it came out of.

Most Locksmiths can cut and program new keys for you however they will need an original key from the car they cannot reprogram from an already copied one. That's what I've been told anyways (when looking for another for a Ford.)

A locksmith can cut you a new key that will be the "valet" key. Only to open locks but not start car. The honda tech has to essentially program your ecu I believe to the keys. They're are nothing protruding or raised up from a cut key but one of the other takes place by downloading and or uploading info to flash ecu. 2 cut keys and programmed at dealer was around $120. If locksmith can r/w to ROM of ecu then yes he can crank your car.

I believe the catch is that Lowes requires another key mapped to your car before they can cut another one; if you lost your last key, I'm thinking the dealership is pretty much your only option.

So here is a perfect story for this thread - for others future reference.
I lost my only key. My first attempt was to call a locksmith to come out and make the key (Code and all as this is a real possibility - unlike what some on this thread have stated).
My initial call netted me a quote of 129. I thought Eff yeah. Great price. Then I get the call from the locksmith who quoted me 250+
I said no way and waited a day for the key to turn up.
As it did not, I called AAA. Because I am a + member I receive 100 dollars towards the cost. The company they use, who made it to my location in about 2 hours, charges 200 and with the credit it was only 100. I added a second key for an additional 50 for a grand total of 150+tax.
So, if you ever encounter this, buy yourself a AAA+ membership. I have two people on it which costs 111 total. Get your key made and boom, for the price of 100 and up, you get your replacement key. If you don't have AAA+, get it. If you paid full price for a locksmith you would get just your key instead of a AAA+ and your key.
I hope this helps.
Cheers.
