Default 1999 Accord Trunk Latch

I recently shipped my '99 Accord Sedan and when I did I turned the lock on the trunk latch. Now having received the car and unlocked the latch, the trunk does not open. I can open the gas cover by pushing the latch down like always, but pulling the trunk latch up does nothing and it can only be opened with the key in the key-hole on the trunk. Thoughts?

Open the trunk and have someone move the lever inside the car, do you see the cable moving?

Yes, though it seems not as much as the key does in the lock. Perhaps something broke in the latch that is causing it to not pull as much as the key?

What trim level (e.g. LX, EX, etc.) is your Accord?

It sounds more like a problem with the cable at either the opener inside the cabin or at the trunk lid latch.

Although it can be a problem with the trunk lid latch, it sound less like that would be the problem. The latch can normally be open either with the key in the trunk lid (the key cylinder has a rod that attaches to the latch), the opener cable, or the remote (the trunk lid latch for EX trim levels have an actuator). -- Essentially, there are 3 methods to try to release the trunk lid latch on an EX.

  1. Check the cable is properly connected to the opener, see images.
  2. Check the connection and operation of the cable at the trunk lid latch.
