Unhappy 2000 accord lx - transmission code P0740

new member here from Orange County, CA.

So, I got this code P0740 and the engine light came on. Transmission is slipping. Not bad when the car is just started. However the slipping gets worse when it gets warm.

So a transmission rebuild is required. I get a wide range of cost from $900, $1,300, $1,700, $2,000 up to $2,600.

So the question is I am not even sure if it is worth it. I mean you rebuild the transmission and then what's next the engine and so on. Does it make sense to spend more money.

Nonetheless, if i do, anyone recommending a good transmission rebuilder in So Cal. I want it done right but I also do not the cost to be reasonable.

Any good recommendation is highly appreciated.

You can probably recover your money on re-sale on a used trans replacement, however finding a good trans can be a challenge.

Suggest to go for the lowest mileage trans you can find. Check donor VIN for vehicle history to get a better feel for age/use of trans. Inspect for overall appearance of trans and how yard takes care of inventory (inside storage or in the car).

Car-part.com and ebay are potential sources. See following example.

JDM Honda Accord H23A vtec 2 3L 4CYLINDER Automatic Transmission 1998 2002 | eBay

You may be able to repair for $1-$1.5K including labor for installation. W/o repair, your vehicle is only worth salvage value, perhaps $500. W/ repair, it should be worth $1.5K-$2K.

good luck

Just me but finding out "why" something failed is as good if not better that just "replacing" parts.

If you can find a shop to rebuild with the upgrades- read this; http://www.sonnax.com/system/pdfs/35...pdf?1320330979

Add an aftermarket trans cooler, keep up with trans fluid changes.....say every 15~25 K. Keep up with regular engine maint (timing belt, tune up, oil changes, ect)....I bet you could get at least another 100~150K out out the car.

You have to make the decision.
