Default 3.0 smoking

Not a frequent poster, looking for some help. Have a 2006 ex v6 smoking. car has less than 60k on it. Definitely oil burning, gray/black smoke. Not a fuel concern. seems to get worse overtime. seafoamed it thinking it could be carbon on the rings. didn't change at all. Pulled the pcv out to check and seems to be working. Was thinking valve seals but clean oil is in the intake before seals. So I'm thinking pcv is bad even though is doesn't seem to be stuck or clogged. Cheap attempt I know. just don't want to wait the weeks to make sure it clears up and burns all the oil out of the intake. Anyone have any issues close to this?? Thanks in advance!!

  • Blue smoke = Oil
  • White smoke = Coolant/Water
  • Gray/Black = Fuel (as in a rich mixture)

Oil smoke is blue; I cannot say it any plainer than that.

Have you noticed whether or not the fuel consumption (gas mileage) has dropped off? Are you having to add a lot of oil between changes?Just asking, as it'll help narrow your problem.

You aren't sure where the oil loss is happening. You may want to pull the spark plugs and look for a white crust if one or all the cylinders are burning oil.

Not sure what kind of diagnostic tools you got, but maybe try a compression test on each cylinder. Try a dry compression test, then a tablespoon of oil into the cylinder and repeat.

If you do decide to do a compression test, pull all of the plugs out first, as that'll give you a more accurate reading. Then do a "wet" compression test. What you're looking for is all cylinders within 10% of each other, and around 120 to 160 psi on the gauge. The closer to 160 the better. Note any that are 120 and below, as those are your likely culprets (worn oil control rings, valve stems seals, etc...).

Hmmm, can't say I've ever seen worn valve stem seals cause lo compression, in fact, in my experience, worn oil control rings don't usually cause low compression either.
