83/4 cv boot changing, can it be done by an amateur?
Hi folks,
I have a right hand drive 1983/4 (I believe it was built in 83 but not registered til 84) 1.6 litre manual transmission not 4 wheel drive beasty, with a thoroughly split cv joint boot on the front port side (the passenger side, not the side you open up to change the clutch), and the only advice my better half has found relating to it is to replace the assembly as whole, which isn't really an option as you can image how thin on the ground that sort of thing is these days.
He's out wrestling with the thing now, but being much more of a reader than a doer I thought I'd hit the interwebs to see what sage and learned advice I could muster.
If we cannae sort this the poor thing may be for the chop, as it needs to pass the APK (Dutch equialent MOT/TUV), and I've grown quite attached to the old man,

So, it turns out that with ignorance of what is supposed to be impossible (and enough lube) most things can be achieved.
In the end it was a case of taking the whole axle out of the gearbox, and encouraging the new boot down from the top rather than what seemed like the more obvious angle of attack, taking the disc off.
