97 abs buzzing

Question 97 abs buzzing

Howdy, new here. Couldn't find my exact problem. I have a 97 EX that the ABS buzzes in 2 second intervals for 30 seconds EVERY time it starts, then stops and ABS light comes on. Checked the code and it says 1-3, which is high pressure leak. I just replaced the o-rings (honda genuine) for the accumulator and motor, but no difference in the buzzing. My main question is, when I was replacing the motor o-ring, I saw what I thought to be calcium build-up on the spring and a "wet dog" smell, like when you remove a rubber tire. I'm just wondering if there is some repair I'm missing or is this thing shot? The brake fluid does go down, but very slowly.

It sounds like you have a leak. There is a TSB (attached) on leaking modulator plugs that I found to be cause of leaks in 97 Acura 2.2CL (same modulator as Accords).

I have found used 94-97 Accord ABS modulators to be readily available as used at prices < $50.

Suggest finding a local salvage yard unit using car-part.com and go by to inspect/purchase. They will usually offer a working part garuntee. There is no way they will absolutely know the part is good. I went through a couple of duds (one bad) and one leaking before combining parts to get one good one.

Modulator removal/replacement is straightforward and easy. Be careful w/ the brake lines and buy a tubing nut wrench (harbor freight has a set for <$10)) to loosen the 10mm nuts. Nuts are wickedly tight and an open-end 10mm will round the off for sure.

Thx for the quick reply! One more question, will I have to bleed the main system if I do those plugs like it says in the TBS? I ask because if so, then I might as well detach all the brake lines and take the whole thing out give it a good cleaning and inspect it further.

You should bleed the ABS Unit anytime you "open it up". In fact just for grims, try bleeding the ABS unit before doing anything else.

There is pressure in the ABS unit so you need to attach a hose over the bleeder and have the other end in a catch can/jar. If not you will have brake fluid spraying all over.

Before I changed the o-rings I did open the bleeder on the AbS, but no fluid came out, not even a hiss of air. I know the abs system is different from the main master cylinder, I was just wondering if once these plugs are opened if they let air into the main system, not the abs system, thx

I found the whole modulator on e-bay, but it says it's for a 2.7l V6, but I have a V-tech 4cyl. Will this work in mine, the seller couldn't confirm, just said he was 98% sure.

I checked car-part.com for a modulator for your car and it shows the 2.2L and 2.7LV6 as different parts. I seem to remember the V6 modulator is on pax side.

Check car-part.com near your zip code for a modulator. I saw them as cheap as $20. There are lots available.

When I've had to I've order parts by mail from salvage yards. Always had good service.

I bled the entire braking system whenever I removed the modulator. I did not bleed modulator itself, but it does have a bleeder.

To bleed the abs, you will need to start the car for a few seconds....buzz. Shut it off and open the bleeder. Repeat.

Of course keep an eye one the fluid level inside the abs unit.

The fact you opened the bleeder and nothing came out - Just my opinion but I believe there is still air in the system. So I would spend a little time and some brake fluid to see if you can bleed it before replacing, again just my opinion.
