Distributor Saft Seal leak. Replacement?
So i removed my dist. today to replace the o-ring because i had an oil leak all over the engine from under the dist. and i found oil inside. all the contacts were covered in oil and so messy i cant believe my car was still running. so i dismanted it all and without a doubt i have a bad internall shaft seal. its very easy to replace but no local part stores have them and they are about $20 with shipping online. Does anyone know anyone who may carry these? or a cheaper source. Thanks.

Just got the Seal today. Replacing it is easy but as for removing the oil. Engine degreaser in the dist. Cap? That would clean it out nicely the rest I will wipe out but not sure if the degreaser will hurt the metal contacts.

Acetone dissolves oil and evaporates very easily w/o residue from the acetone itself ,,, @ hardware type store, Lowes.
Flammable like gasoline so use outside.
I'd like to know how it works on distributor, too.

Acetone is also known to damage/melt/dissolve plastics.
Acetone + plastic dist. cap, rotor, and plastic housing = bad news
It would be good on metals but horrible for plastic, acetone and MEK do a number on plastic.
I will just use the degreaser. it degreases the metal engine block with no corrosion so i cant imagine it being a problem on metal contacts.

Electrical contact cleaner would probably work best. Brake cleaner may also do the trick. Then let it completely air dry or use compressed air from a can or something.
Yeah, you don't want to use acetone. I used acetone to dissolve huge packing foam and plastic before.
