I think your car still had a distributor. Get the timing marks lined up to TDC. Pull of the distributor cap and make sure the rotor is pointing to the #1 cylinder wire and not #4. If the rotor is pointed towards #4, then you likely installed the distributor key 180 degrees off. The key is offset, but it is possible to install it backwards. I have done this before.
Make sure the wires are in the proper firing order. Looking at the distributor from the passenger side of the car, the order should be 1, 3, 4, 2 going clockwise.
