Distributor issues on 91 accord EX. I have checked the regular issues.
Hi folks,
I have a question for the Honda Guru's.
I recently purchased a 91 accord with the timing belts snapped.
I have replaced the belts, all the seals head gasket (cleaned the carbon off the valves and head), replaced 2 bent exhaust valves.
My issue is that I am not getting spark.
I have resoldered the main relay as this is a common fail point. I have fuel pressure.
I recently went to a junk yard and grabbed another distributor with a small amount of lateral shaft play.
After installing the new distributor and making sure all the timing marks are at TDC. I fire up the car. The car runs smooth for about 3 minutes. When I hook up my timing light to adjust the timing, I move the distributor a hair and the car stalls. I am not able to restart as I no longer have spark.
I pull the distributor and now I have more lateral shaft play. I also have aquired vertical shaft play.
My old distributor had both lateral and vertical shaft play.
I am aware of the distributor recall in 93.
Is it possible that I could have been the victim of another bearing failure?
What else could cause a distributor to wobble after a few short minutes and cut out spark?
Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

I did check the cap. There is no wear on the cap.
I should clarify....
The shaft play is on side that connects to the camshaft.

The ground was not missed as I cleaned it and connected it during the head installation.
I did grab another distributor this morning.
I will install it and see if it fires up.

Yes. A non moving distributor when the engine is turning means a broken timing belt. I just replaced the timing belt.
The problem is solved.
I was the victim of another faulty distributor.
When I put the new distributor in she fired on the first crank.
Now I just need to install the rear wheel cylinders, brake lines.

Ahh.... I should have been more specific. When I said "new" it was new to my car.
It was another distributor from the junk yard. I had a 90 day exchange or store credit. The pre owned distributor only cost me $20.00 with all the electronics inside it.
