I have one question, which oil is the one used for the manual transmission on a 89 accord lxi? I read the manual, but it seems to recommend SAE30, 10W30, 10W40, but aren't these like motor oils? Or are there specific transmissions oil with those same rating? Thanks for your help!

 

Honda tranny's use straight 10w30 motor oil.... actually a number of cars do... if you put "gear lube" (which is usually like 90w) in there is really makes things funky.... I had someone do that to a car before I bought it and there was so much extra resistance that it actually broke one side of the shift fork..... The best stuff to use though is Honda MTF fluid or some people will actually put a 30w synthetic in.... but like I said the most consistent stuff to use is the Honda brand MTF...

 

Wow , I really didn't know that you could put motor oil on the transmission, everyday I learn something new. The Honda Brand MTF do they sell it in stores like autozone or do is it a dealer only item? I like the idea of using synthetic oil in the transmission, something like royal purple or amsoil.

 

Well, you can't put engine oil into just any tranny. Honda manual trannys are designed to take that oil. (Well, maybe old OLD Hondas were different?)

Honda MTF is good in their trannys that originally were designed for 10w-30engine oil. AFAIK, it's only at dealers - I've never seen it anywhere else.

Not sure about synthetic engine oil. The synchros are like little clutches. They rely on a certain level of friction, and synthetic engine oilcan be TOO slippery. I would use Honda MTF.

 

Called the dealer and they could not tell me nothign about the Honda MTF, they just kept saying use the motor oil. It would interesting to hear from sone that as used synthetic oil on the tranny. I'll keep looking.

 

Thats weird. Like they didnt know what you were talking about? I just went into the dealer about a month ago and got six quarts of Honda MTF. That stuff is kinda spendy, it was like $6.50 a quart or something.

do NOT waste your money on Honda MTF or any other expensive oils,, ( syntet, etc etc ) Just use any major brands 10w-30 and you will be fine,, trust me i have done it for years and years and never had a problem But whatever you do DO NOT use gear oil 80-90 w..
