Default RE: power steering leak

ORIGINAL: CRWJumper

I just got back from the dealer, and he said that the PS rack on my 2003 Accord EX v6 was leaking. He showed me the fluid under the car on the boot (cover) under the drivers side, and recommended that I replace the PS rack. $1500!!

I am more inclined to just top off the PS fluid from time to time instead of pouring so much money into it at this point.

Is this a safe thing to do? Could other problems arise from this leak?

There is no PS fluid on my garage floor. The mechanic/advisor told me that it probably only leaks when I'm turning. I wasn't sure if I trusted him.
Any advice would be greatly appreaciaed.

Thanks!
For what it's worth, my father was able to completely cure a steering rack leak on a 97 Avalon w/ Lucas PS Stop Leak. I would sure try this before a $1500 fix. You could also install a used rack far cheaper. Check car-part.com for a used part cost/location near you.

good luck
