i noticed my accord temp guage going up one day i was stuck in traffic.. when i got home i checked the coolant that was low so i filled it up and started the car amd let it run the guage was still going up i checked a,d the thermostat opens and the fans comes on but its still going up i did let it go all the way to hot thought any suggestions

 

Check the Radiator for being caked with something especially the condenser side.

 

the radiator isnt cracked i noticed that its pushing fluid out the over flow tank dont know y its doing that

 

Overheating at a stop is not enough air flow going through the radiator and if the fans work properly you are down to the radiator pretty much. I didn’t post cracked. I posted caked as in covered with something especially the condenser side.

 

ok i checked the radiator for being caked it wasnt buti noticed something wierd if i step on the gas the temp guage will fo down like if i reverse which is leading me to think the water pump but nevere seen anything like this before

 

Before diving into the WP and timing/balance shaft belt replacment (might as well do both, you're already there). Try bleeding the coolant after replacing the t-stat. But then I think about "why was it low to begin with"? Could be leaking from the WP but there are a number of other places it could be leaking from.

 

a couple of suggestions.....

# 1 why did you let the car go all the way up to hot?? if engine was overheating you turn engine off ASAP,,hope for your sake that did not damage the head gasket

# 2 ,i agree with Poorman ,,,,,,,,pressure test system for a possible leak, chk radiator cap, ..,, i got a better idea.........here you go

Open the radiator cap, let the engine run a while(operating temp) and see if the fluid in the radiator is moving, if it is moving then the water pump is working. Now while watching it, did the anti-freeze level go down or up? If the level did not move, it is probably the thermostat.

 

@ desert honda i never let the car go all the way hot just a little over the half way mark... but i did check it out and if i let it sit and idle it will run hot the fans stay on but the temp keeps going up but if i step on the gas and keep it above 2500 the temp goes back down which means i have a lack of flow i was thinking the thermostat

 

I had the same problem with our VW passat. It would only get hot when sitting idle. When I checked the radiator, you could see some coolant running like a river, but not much and the thermostat did open by seeing the coolant level drop.

What happened to that car is that VW puts in water pumps with plastic impellars and they break off. $1200 at the dealer later the problem went away. So the water pump was kind of running do to missing impellar blades.

I don't think any other brand uses plastic impellars, but it sounds like a water pump issue. Granted Honda's are a lot easier than our Passat to replace the water pump do to the VW you need to take the whole front end of the car off
