Default Tranny axle seal and axle replacement

I'm thinking about replacing the passenger side axle on my '96 Accord EX Coupe along with the transmission axle seal (leaking). How hard (or is it do-able) would this be to do without any special tools? I know a guy who is a Honda ASE certified (or so he says) mechanic that will do it for me parts and labor for about $180 bucks, but he told me he would be buying the parts from Advance Auto... I just figured I could save myself about half that just to do it myself. Is the axle seal replaceable from the outside or is it an invasive procedure?

Thanks,
Nathan

I know on most cars to replace a half shaft you have to disassemble the entire suspension to remove the shaft, as for Honda specific I'm not sure. As for the tranny seal I can't help you. I would think the half shaft replacement would be doable if you are slightly technically inclined.

PS, you might need a big pry bar or a fork to seperate the ball joint on the suspension.

If the boots are just leaking grease, you can simply replace the boots for about ~$20 per axle then add grease before sealing. I have been warned about poor quality of rebuildt half-shafts from Autozone.

Is the axle seal just the clip that goes on axle side of the shaft?
