Yesterday morning I heard a sound that reminded me of a die grinder coming from my car, turned out the starter (replaced in March 16) was spinning by itself without the keys en the car, and not engaging the flywheel. Disconnected the battery, reconnected it, and after a few seconds, it spun again. Removed the starter and took it to be tested, worked fine on the bench. Now I'm at a complete loss where to look next. Other issues: battery light stays on, but voltage tests OK, no cruise control, and door open indicator on dash is lit all the time. I'm not a mechanic, but I can change out a part or fix a wire if I can find it. Any ideas?

 

I've had starter noise on a 94EX. It was caused by starter Bendix drive not sliding back on the shaft when car "catches" to start. This overdrives the starter and leads to a grinding or screeching noise. Fix is to clean and lubricate the shaft the Bendix gear slides on, or replace the starter. No apparent damage occurs when this noise arises but is annoying if constant or frequent.
