I'm not talking about reman or rebuilt. All of the parts stores sell brand new ones too. They are much better than rebuilt and are not much more money. If a boot has a hole in it, not only did grease come out, but contaminants got in. The only way to ensure that it won't fail due to that is to take the joint completely apart, thoroughly clean everything, reassemle it, put in new grease and install a new boot. That will cost a lot more than a new shaft. Just putting a new boot on is begging for problems in the near future.

I have been through a lot of half shafts and I've done it every possible way: new boots, reman half shafts, new half shafts. Though they're the cheapest option, I have had no luck with reman units. You don't get a fraction of the life out of them. New is good, but expensive. If you've gotten to 120K miles on the original boots, they don't owe you anything. It's worth the trouble to pull them and replace them so you don't have to give up the OEM joints. I got my Legend to 240,000 miles on the original joints. They clacked a little bit at the end when I unloaded and then loaded them, but they were still smooth. OTOH, I went through two sets of reman half shafts on my Integra in only 180,000 miles. Totally unpredictable wear. I maintain my rides for the long haul. My rule of thumb: at 120K (or when they start to crack), replace the boots. If they've already split, go with new, not remanufactured units.

If you have no noise in them and they are cracking but not open then replacing the boots and grease is the way to go. If they are opened cracks, even a little, or they are making any noise at all, replace the shaft. And I agree about reman or rebuilt, if you only plan on 50K miles before junking or selling, then reman would do I suppose. If you plan on keeping it then only go with new.
