I was interested in tring to replace the muffler on my 1990 accord lx and was wondering what  I would need to do the job. The muffler has rusted through and has a whole that is causeing anouing noise pollution and I am in fear of getting pulled over when I am riding dirty(just kidding). I spotted a section of what looked like recently replaced muffler on a wrecked honda at the yard. The exhaust system back to the cataletic converter looked like it had been replaced. Would the pipe system all the way back to the cat  be worth salvaging, to save a few bucks as well a head ache on down the road. Should I do it my self or is it not worth the effert?Where and how do you disconect the rest of the exhaust system from the cat? Dos it just twist out or do you need to break a weld that hold them in place? Should I just replace the muffler if the rest of the pipe that I can see looks o.k. ie. not that much rust?HOw easy is it just to pop the muffler off to replace? Thanks for your time and Knowlage. Not a hard job if the bolts aren't completely rusted, you'll want all the piping from the cat conver back (aka catback exhaust if you buy a new one...) and a new "donut" that goes where the catback meets the cat...

Usually 2 or 3 bolts hold the exhaust pipe to the cat converter just disconnect those and drop the system..

The 2-door & 4-door probably have different lengths so wouldn't fit.

Biggest variable in the job is how much pain & agony from rusted bolts.  I usually count on breaking them so I buy new bolts anyway.  Then I don't bother spending extra time trying to save the bolts.

I fortunatly found some interchangable hondas at the wrecking yard. I was woundering about the dual looking exh. pipes that are coming out of the muffler of the ex versions of the accords of 90-93. It looks like to me that the length of the muffler and the exh. pipe that you can disconnet from the rest of the system in the same length. The only differnece seems to be the double pipes leading out of the muffler. Is there realy any signifigant differnce in the proformance or gas milage with the dual instead of the one pipe/muffler system that was stock with the lx models, like mine? I would like to go ahead and put the ex duel muffler on my lx model. Would this be benificial or should I go ahead and use a single pipe muffler that I found as well and put that one on instead. One more thing, do you recommend using any type of lube to get the rusty bolts loose too disconnect the muffler from the rest of the system? Thanks again!!! land Shark

I don't think there will be much difference.  Since they're all used, I'd rather choose based on overall rusty condition of the systems.

PB Blaster works pretty good for rusty bolts.  Also Liquid Wrench or Kroil.  Once it's broken loose, get some grease on the threads or it'll seize up as you continue removing them.  That stuff is good for loosening, but not real good lubricant.

Where I am, the exhaust bolts are usually rusted pretty good.  Plan on breaking a couple, so you may as well get all new nuts & bolts.
