Ignition coil

FlyLow -> Ignition coil (7/14/2008 4:40:25 PM)

Is it necessary to replace the ignition coil (the one under distributor cap) after a certain time? Does the tip wear out? Or is there a way to clean the tip with something?

No schedule for replacement.  Wait till it breaks.

I usually scrape the crud out with a knife.  Theres no motion against that, so it usually doesn''t get bad.  Is it missing the little spring so the spark has to jump a gap??

If you mean the spring on the distributor cap that is supposed to touch the coil tip, then yes it is there. The tip looks delicate i was affraid to scrape it off. What does it look like when new? Any one have a picture?

Coil #11 isnt shown in much detail.

so I just changed the distributor cap and the rotor. I put a bunch of dielectric grease on wires and caps connectors. The car started for a few seconds just fine, and then died, and now it wont start.  What the happened? (same car as above)

Turns out the fuel pump isnt working, cause i cant hear it when ignition is turned on, the fuse looks fine.  How does the pump go out from changing distributor cap and rotor?

The manual says to test the lead #5 on connector that is on the fuel pump for voltage.  Is that with ingnition on or off?  I didn''t get voltage from there.  Has anyone had this problem?

Car has 110K miles, how long do fuel pumps last?

JimBlake -> RE: Ignition coil (7/21/2008 7:34:26 AM)

Turn key to ON but not immediately to START.

Main relay gives power to fuelpump for about 2 seconds.  Test that wire during that time.

Ok I got roughly 12V on one of the leads  for about 2 seconds, on the fuel pump connector, after turning the ignition to ON, just before start.  So it has to be the fuel pump.  Is there a way to test the pump without taking it out?

Test OTHER lead for good ground connection.

Then make up jumper wires to supply power (+ & -) dirctly from battery to pump.
If pump runs with the jumpers, we need more tests.

I got a new pump from autozone $174 swapped it out, and she started right up.

Thanks for posting the FIX.  I would have tested before spending that much, but you got it done.
