Hi there every1, new to the forum, first honda, i recently picked up an 81 accord hatchback 2-door, 5 speed with 170,000 miles on it for 800, new trans, clutch, thermo, tune up, only problem, previous owner told me the carb needs to be rebuilt due to the fact that it cannot hold an idle and backfires a bit, after purchasing i learned that this could also be the timing belt and could be a costly repair, if so, i may think about a new engine, im just wondering what motors are compatible for a direct swap, and looking for any insight into my idle/backfire issue

which engine is that one? wiki it to know more about your engine man... and please post pics if possible. Wasn''t born by then! but i know that HB and it could be made into a nice little rocket! Does CRX engine match? I''ll check on that.

Rebuild the carb or replace it. Check the timing. Much easier and less expensive than replacing the motor.

Your motor is an A series engine.
