ac diagnoses step by step

maro -> ac diagnoses step by step (7/24/2008 11:34:15 AM)

Please explain to me like an infant. AC never worked. I want to fix it. Where do I begin?

More information for us.

Are you comfortable with electrical troubleshooting & repair?  Thats the place to start.

Working with the refrigerant system means buying some expensive equipment.  More practical to fix (or rule out) electrical problems then take it to a shop.

How do you want to do this?  Theres a few people on here that are much better than me with the refrigerant side of things.

Check that the fan and compressor clutch work first.

I had a better post, but it got the HAF error.

maro -> RE: ac diagnoses step by step (7/24/2008 1:17:11 PM)

I would just be searching old threads if it would work. How do I test the clutch? and I''m not expert at electric, but I can give it a shot (shock)!

Have someone sit in the car and turn the AC on and off, you should see the pulley engage and disengage the compressor.  With the car and AC on, both fans should spin.

okay, I''ll give it a shot in about an hour. If the clutch does not engage, what is it then a matter of?

falkore24 -> RE: ac diagnoses step by step (7/24/2008 2:38:57 PM)

bad clutch or controls

JimBlake -> RE: ac diagnoses step by step (7/24/2008 3:05:32 PM)

Other possibilities...

Refrigerant leaked out = pressure switch prevents the compressor from switching on.  In that case you need to find & fix the leak.

Electrical problem = lots of possible places.  Bad relay, bad switch, loose wiring, etc, etc...

maro -> RE: ac diagnoses step by step (7/25/2008 9:04:31 AM)

okay,

I didn''t start diagnosing the ac yet.. gonna start tomorrow, had to take her in this morning for rotors and brakes.

I''ll be on here asking quetions this week-end for sure. Thanks guys

Just don''t get frustrated if you don''t get answers quickly.  Most of the members here are on when they are slacking off at work.  I''m rarely online during the weekend .... and I''m taking off Mon. and Tues.

maro -> RE: ac diagnoses step by step (7/27/2008 7:12:41 AM)

Okay, so no fans come on And I hear nothing when engaged

Next step?

maro -> RE: ac diagnoses step by step (7/29/2008 8:12:09 AM)

up..

maro -> RE: ac diagnoses step by step (7/30/2008 6:42:18 AM)

so.... can anyone help me see through to the next step in diagnosing my ac

thanks guys

deserthonda -> RE: ac diagnoses step by step (7/30/2008 7:48:07 AM)

try an easy test, find the pressure switch  located rt side frt of car by the rec drier , unplug the connector, jump the 2 wires together  ( blue/yellow and red/white ) if fans and compressor engage  most likely system is out or very low on freon ,,,,,

if you have a set of gauges you can hook them up and chk the pressures

try this first and let us know
