z20 -> RPM OF COLD ENGINE 4-CYL (7/24/2008 6:35:32 PM)

HELLO FOLKS,

IF YOUR IN EAST COST OR IN CANADA AND DRIVING A 4 CYLENDER, PLEASE TELL ME YOUR COLD ENGINE IDLE IN THE MORNING WITH TRANSMIS IS IN PARK, (AIR TEMP 18-21 DEGREE C).

FOLLOWING MY LAST POST WHICH WAS "UNINTENDED ACCELERATION" I HAVE NARROWED DOWN THE PROBLEM TO MAYBE HIGH COLD ENGINE RPM.

I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO LOOK UP ANYWHERE THAT WHAT THE RPM SHOULD BE AT ROUND THAT TEMPRATURE  WHEN ENGINE IS COLD.

MINE FIRST TIME  IN THE MORNING HOVERS AROUND 2000 RPM WHEN TRANS IS IN "p"  AND ONCE I PUT THE TRANSMITION IN D CAR JUMPS FORWARD VERY QUICKLY AND IS VERY HARD TO CONTROL.

I WILL APPRECIATE EVERYBODY"S HELP.

You dont need to SHOUT.

That RPM seems in the right neighborhood, but I''''ll have to start paying attention to it.

My present cars are manual trannys so control is never an issue.  But all auto-tranny cars Ive ever owned had braking power far exceeding the engine power, even at WOT.

It seems obvious to me that it is never safe to put an auto-tranny in gear without holding the brakes.  And I mean HOLD the brakes, not just barely enough to clear the brake-interlock switch.

I checked your other post, you said 2003.  What trim level?  California or 49-state car?  If I try to look for that spec, I probably need to know exactly what it is.

I couldnt find a spec, but since its under control of the ECU, it should turn on the check-engine light & set an error code if it was wrong.
