i understand that i am no good with cars right now. but i'm getting a new one so i'd like to learn how to fix this one. i know i can take it to a pro but i'd rather do it myself so i can see what's happening. i like to build or fix things :) and since cars are where it's at i'd like to give it a try. yah i know about the whole diagnose procedure i go with that on computers often. but still i seem to be getting mixed answers here. yah i'm about to get a manual. and by the way i just drove my car and i don't think the thermostat is opening because my lower hose is hot but not as hot as the upper hose. or maybe the fans electrical wiring is retarded... i'll figure it out soon though i just needed a pinpoint on what i need to pay attention to. thanks!

if the lower hose is HOT than your t-stat is working properly,, it is opening to allow coolant flow...........
try something real simple,,,,,,,,,,on the t-stat housing there is a green plug, start the engine, unplut that plug, jump the wires together at the plug,, if fans come on, you got a bad fan switch,, the 1 where you just disconnected that green plug from,,
try and let me know

Copa-Sometimes it helps to just sit there and read through other's posts for a while.. do a search and get orientated with your car and the common problems people have with these. It appears that the overheating problem is common and the usual fixes are a new T-stat, or waterpump, or bad fans..

Alot of it is common sense, Like I said, do a search and see what problems others have had and how they fixed it...

http://www.hondaaccordforum.com/m_7644/tm.htm Here was a thread that I hijacked a while back when I had changed my waterpump.

You can usually learn quite a bit from posts like that, and prevent multiple posts on the same topic. (in my opinion.)

Brendan.

how do i jump my fan switch? and by the way there isn't a green one next to the thermostat housing, there's a green one on the top radiator hose next to the engine, and also another one in between the top and bottom radiator hose. i took a paper clip and tried to jump it but i'm not sure if i'm doing it right.

use a paper clip and jump the 2 wires togtheter at switch at thermostat housing,, i could have sworn that it was a green plug ,but maybe in the later years , anyho the 2 colr wires are ,, blue and black,, .. stick the paper clip in the plug so those 2 wires are jumped together ..on the 91 plug might be on frt side of t-stat housing. on rear of distributor

the switch next of the top rad hose is to make the fan come on when car is off.. those wires should be white/green and black... do not jump that ,,

i'm looking at a service manual, i do have 2 green plugs but they're infront of the engine block, not behind it where my thermostat is. but i do see the 3 plugs, 2 are green, and one's the condensor fan. which by the way that doesn't work either (fans coming on when car is off) and the grey smaller one is for the coolant temp gauge which i'm guessing is the thing in my dash, am i supposed to mess with this one or can we rule this one out? the last one is hanging off but in the picture it isn't. it's the coolant temp sensor. now ur saying i take the paper clip and touch both the prongs together with it? because i think i've tried that and nothing from the fans happens. let me see if i can find my voltimeter and test the power going to it. i switched the fuse with the window fuse by the way like in an earlier post i read and turns out my windows worked when i switched it. so i'm assuming it's not the fuse.

what are the possibilities of this? bad wiring or a bad motor or even a bad switch? do both fans share the same motor or do they have their own one? because if they have their own one then i can probably rule out it's not the motor right?

i also jumped both the fans and neither came on. is it possible they both just have bad motors? like i directly jumped each one, not the switch. just the plug outside of the fans and i didn't get any response (car on or off it doesn't matter)

The plug is green and it attaches DIRECTLY to a sensor that is on the t-stat housing. I had to jump mine back in the day when my cooling system was messed up, the fans must have ran for 8,000 miles straight (now work normally) but anyways.. It is hard to fit a paperclip in there (I know from experience ) so you will have to press it in there pretty hard, or get a smaller paperclip, I was also successful using a stripped peice of wire on both ends and jamming it in there too.

The car doesn't have to be running, just switch it to the "ON position" ( not 'ACC') so that way it's safer for you and you don't overheat the car from idling or something.

It could be different between the 91 and 92, but if you like, my neighbor has a 92 Accord LX, I can go bug him to pop his hood for me and I can take a picture of you if you need it.

B.

ok i took a smaller paper clip the holes look like really tiny squares and it was difficult to get it in there, there was also 2 prongs above it. is that the correct connector? i stuck the paper clip in an individual fan and it didn't come on either. i'm guessing it's the 2 motors. i don't have a voltimeter to test if there's any power going through the wires or not. but so far the paper clip has yet to turn anything on.

OK, well I got my neighbor to let me take a few pictures of his 92 LX motor. It appears to be a little different than my accord because it has an external coil or something it seems for the distributor mounted directly above the fan control switch. On my 91 it isn't there, and you can reach right down and unplug it.

The hose to the right is the lower radiator hose going into the thermostat housing and that green connector that's plugged into the pink temp switch is what you want:

This is a picture from above. The control wire is located just underneath that big coil like thing that is bolted to the t-stat housing:

Is that the one that you've been accessing??

no because my hoses are fine. it's definitely electrical because i jumped one of the individual fans and it turned... like not as if the motor was broken, but it turned enough to show me it was working fine. however i did the same with the thermostat switch and i got nothin.
