I found in my 2006 ford focus, that I got better fuel mileage when I was at 120KM/H ( I had no tack in the car so I dont know my RPM, roughly 3250 I would think). And in my '91 accord I find that I get better fuel mileage when I travel at 110KM/H(roughly 2500RPM) then when I travel at even 80KM/H(roughly 3300RPM).

Today I added some Prestone injector cleaner, filled up the tank, and headed out of the city. I covered a total of approx. 150 miles and the fuel gauge is still a tad above 3/4's full!!. About 20 of the 150 miles was very steep, hilly terrain. I tried to maintain an average speed of 80km/h most of the time. I'm truly impressed!..extrapolating from this, under similiar conditions,  i should be able to get close to 600 mph!!!

Should you only cruise on flat stright roads? I use my cruise always, as long as traffic is light, even if there are turns and hills...

If your car is designed to run on unleaded regular and you're using premium, you're not only wasting money but getting less power and less mileage. Premium doesn't burn as quickly. Dyno tests prove this. Don't use it unless you need it.

I just purchased my Accord to replace the Volvo so I'm totally new to this forum. Reading through all the comments regarding improving gas mileage, I would like to add, clarify, and emphasize a few points that have served me well. Though the $ savings isn't much, the notion that I am minimizing my fuel consumption is my motivation.

a) Less spirited driving makes a difference. It also translates into less wear and tear on your car; i.e. tires, brakes, engine, and other drivetrain components. The wear/tear thing are the bigger bucks. If you want to be the first to the next red light, that is your choice but you are wasting fuel, your brakes, tires, adding wear and tear to the car's drivetrain, and possibly increasing the chance of meeting a fellow motorist...all for nothing.

b) Driving slower makes a HUGE difference; for every 5 mph over 60 mph, you are using roughly 5% more fuel.
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/driveHabits.shtml    talks about it in different terms but draws the same conclusion.

c) Tire pressure can make a difference in mileage and it varies with temperature. Tire pressure drops 1 psi for every 10 degree (farhenheit) drop in temperature. The opposite is also true. It is one of the reasons I check my tire pressure more frequently when the ambient temperature changes significantly. Consult TireRack for a good article on this.

d) I'm a synthetic oil fan for two reasons. I think the engines last longer and for the mileage benefit. I've only tracked the latter in the Volvo and believe the mpg improvement is 7%-10% over dinosaur oil. I've also never serviced the PCV on that car after 158k miles and believe the synthetic oil has a lot to do with that.

e) Reducing drag and friction are a good thing. Keeping the outside of the car clean and waxed makes a difference.

f) I would suggest that the reason the mileage dropped with the seat heaters on was modestly because of the additional electrical load. The bigger cause was the outside temperature. Your car, any car's mileage decreases as the ambient temperature drops. Because I predominantly drive the Volvo, I am better able to track it's mileage based on temperature and driving conditions. It drops at least 15% in our mild winters with temps typically in the 20's and 30's. I believe there is more ethanol in our winter fuel blend as well and that also may contribute to the noted decline.

I hope my points are helpful. Keep having fun. BTW, my best mileage machine are my bicycles. They get tremendous fuel economy though they require more maintenance than any vehicle per mile traveled.

One of the biggest ways to help your gas mileage is to take most of the crap out of our trunks.  All the extra weight adds to the amount our vehicles have to haul around.
