EGR cleaning

poser_pilot6 -> EGR cleaning (11/4/2006 2:11:23 PM)

So I cleaned out my EGR ports last night. It was actually a lot easier than I had thought it was going to be. It would have been even easier if I had taken my front strut bar off, but I worked around it. There was a HUGE build up of carbon crap in there, I doubt if they have ever been cleaned, and this car has almost 191k miles on it. So now the car is running quite a bit better than it was. However, my check engine light still comes on when I first start up the car. It only happens when I start up the car after it has cooled down. So I guess I need to see if Advance Auto Parts will run the scan and tell me what code I have. Is there a directory of engine codes somewhere on the net?

lots of code lists, your best bet is to find out what the code is and then click on the search button on this forum, chances are it'll show you the answers you need.... if not post the code and we'll help you out

on our DIY section there is a post ( Honda obd trouble codes ) .... you did clear the ecu ,,,right ??

poser_pilot6 -> RE: EGR cleaning (11/4/2006 4:39:51 PM)

Clear the ECU? No. I dont even know how to do that lol. Are you saying that its still got the code in there from when the ECU ports were clogged?

sir_nasty -> RE: EGR cleaning (11/4/2006 4:41:47 PM)

correct, if you didn't clear the ecu it will still report the code (even if it's fixed) until the code is cleared.... just take it to the local auto parts store and have them clear it.

YeuEmMaiMai -> RE: EGR cleaning (11/5/2006 3:31:06 AM)

did you clean the egr valve as well?

poser_pilot6 -> RE: EGR cleaning (11/5/2006 3:36:38 AM)

I cleaned the ports and the runners per Hondadude's instructions that I found on this forum. It didnt say anything about the valve, so I didnt do anything to it. Its running about a hundred times better than it was, I know that. Where is the EGR valve located, and should I tear into it again to clean it?

assuming your car in 97 or older ,, to clear the ecu, remove the back up fuse 7.5 amps in the underhood fuse box for about 20 seconds key off of course

poser_pilot6, What year is your accord???

sir_nasty -> RE: EGR cleaning (11/7/2006 4:14:26 PM)

It's a 94 LX 4Dr.... (I read one of his old posts) He really should put that in his signature though *LOL*

poser_pilot6 -> RE: EGR cleaning (11/7/2006 9:37:58 PM)

I cleared the ECU last night. Seems to have taken care of the 'check engine' light. It didnt come on at all today. I still havent checked into the EGR valve yet. I guess I need to take a look at the online manuals and figure out where it is, sounds like a project for this weekend.

And thanks for the assist, sir nasty. lol

poser_pilot6 -> RE: EGR cleaning (11/8/2006 2:43:16 PM)

By the way, anyone know how to get to the EGR valve lol? I checked the "EGR cleaning" sticky that was posted in the DIY section, but none of those links mentioned the valve, just the ports. Thanks guys.

sir_nasty -> RE: EGR cleaning (11/8/2006 2:56:14 PM)

just follow the instruction and I'm sure it will be fine, here's a picture if this helps

As I pulled the EGR valve this afternoon, I noticed that the EGR valve lift sensor wasnt even plugged into anything. It has a plug that runs off the top, and I can see the other plug that (I assume) it should plug into. But it wasnt plugged in. Any reason for it to not be plugged in? Should I plug it back in?

poser_pilot6 -> RE: EGR cleaning (12/2/2006 1:10:22 PM)

I am about at my wits end with this EGR stuff. After I initially cleaned the ports, the car drove great for a few days, then the "bucking" started again. So I took off and cleaned the EGR valve, and noticed that the lift sensor wasnt plugged in. So when I reassembled it, I plugged the lift sensor back in to the plug that it looked like it should go into (the only plug available). The car ran well for a few more days, but then the symptoms returned. I shall attempt to describe what it is doing.

This occurs when the car has been sitting for a while and has had the chance to cool down. I start driving, and I get a bucking or jerking feeling. RPMs are between 1200 and 2500 when it happens. If I floor the gas, it hesitates like it has turbo lag or something, then kicks in and runs out to WOT just fine. USUALLY after I do that once or twice, it doesnt happen again until the next time I start the car after it has cooled down. For lack of a better way to describe it, it feels like there is something clogged somewhere, and when I go to WOT it clears the blockage for a little bit.

I have cleaned the EGR system twice now, I have tried fuel system cleaner, SeaFoam, oil additives, changing the oil doesnt help, changing the fuel filter didnt help, and I just dont know what the problem is.

A couple of thoughts. Maybe my EGR valve is inoperative? It moves fine when I manually press the diaphram up, is there a real way to test it? Also, is it possible my o2 sensor is bad? I have heard that it causes symptoms that are similar to what I am experiencing.

Anyone have any ideas? Sir Nasty? Desert? JimBlake? Yeu? Anyone? Lol I just want my car to run right!!
