Replace 2001 Honda Accord Stereo

I replaced an OEM Honda single dimm (thin standard size radio with the storage bin beneath) with a Kenwood MP332 stereo. It turned out to be a fairly easy job.

First you must remove the entire plastic panel around it which includes the A/C temp controls, air vents and around the clock – all one unit – do not need to take the A/C knobs off, they come off with the overall unit. It is held in place by 3 screws – 2 underneath and one behind the clock.

1-     Remove clock by very carefully prying it out. I used a very small, thin screwdriver to pry from each side. Once out, unplug elec. connector by pressing in little catch on side. Remove the screw that was behind clock.
2-     Remove entire panel unit now that you have removed the 3 screws. Disconnect the elec. connectors for the A/C controls.
3-     Stereo rack is held in place by 4 screws/bolts (phillips/5/16”) facing the front. The rack includes the stereo and the storage bin. Pull out antenna cable from back of stereo and disconnect elec. connector.
4-     With rack removed, now remove the 4 screws on the side of the stereo that hold it to the rack.

You will need to buy a wiring harness made for your year Honda to connect the wiring harness plug from your new stereo to the plug from the car wires. You do not want to cutoff the plug from the car! Use plastic crimp connectors to connect up all the wires from the newly bought harness to the harness that came with the new stereo. Don’t let all the wires scare you, they are all color coded. Now you have created a wire harness with plugs on each end that will plug into the stereo and the car’s wire harness plug. Harness was $10 at car audio specialty store ($20 at BestBuy).

All the installation shops told me I must buy and use a new installation rack in order to install a non-Honda stereo. This would include replacing the storage bin. I did NOT find this to be the case.

Install new stereo by reversing the above procedure.

5-     Slide new stereo into rack, secure with the 4 screws in the side.
6-     Plug in antenna
7-     Connect new wiring harness
8-     Mount rack with the 4 screws/bolts in the front
9-     Replace A/C control panel. Don’t forget screw behind clock
10- Push clock back in place

In addition to the stereo, I also installed 4 new Infinity speakers - #6012i in the doors and the #9613i in the rear. See my post on removing the door panels when replacing the door speakers. http://www.hondaaccordforum.com/Removing_Door_Panel_to_Install_Speakers/m_39155/tm.htm
