H22A swap legality

Shadow1992 -> H22A swap legality (1/10/2007 10:13:19 PM)

I have a '92 Accord Ex and I want to swap out the F22A6 for an H22A1....how legal would it be and what parts as far as emissions regulations are concerned  must I keep?

There are many websites showing the "how to" for this swap.  I never see anything mentioned about a legality issue.  I would like to know this information as well, since im thinking about doing this in about 2 years.

Depending on what state you live in most emessions test just check for how "clean" the motor burns and I would assume that as long as you are within those specifications you'd be ok..... You'd probably have to ask the emessions people unless someone here has done the tests themselves or lives in your particular state....

and you can never swap and older motor to a newer year car is illegal in any state

i call bs on that... i know i can run down to the junkyard and grab a 91 f22 and throw it into a 92 and not have ANY legality issues...

poser_pilot6 -> RE: H22A swap legality (1/13/2007 9:48:43 PM)

Actually, he is on the right track.  You can only swap in engines that are not in an older OBD bracket.  Hence, you could NOT legally put a 91 engine into a 92, because 92-95 are OBD 1, and 91-prior are OBD 0.  You can put OBD 1 or OBD 2 engines into an OBD 0 car, but not an OBD 0 or OBD 1 engine into an OBD 2 car.

legionofone -> RE: H22A swap legality (1/13/2007 10:21:30 PM)

well i belive that the 91 accord is OBD1 right? anyway... that is true... u cant put a older engine into a car that has higher emmission regulations

poser_pilot6 -> RE: H22A swap legality (1/13/2007 10:32:20 PM)

Nope, for Honda its 92-95 OBD 1, anything 91 or earlier is OBD 0.  But really you could probably get away with the swap if you dont live in California lol.  And I think you can still put an older engine in the car as long as its in the same OBD bracket (i.e. you could put a 92 engine into a 95 car) but Im not sure on that.

marbro -> RE: H22A swap legality (1/14/2007 11:54:16 AM)

saying you cant put an older engine in a newer cause because of emissions standards is a moot point because of the fact if you go from obd 2 to obd1 or obd0 on a newer engine you lose emissions control and in most cases wont pass the emissions test

miami honda -> RE: H22A swap legality (1/16/2007 7:32:00 PM)

hey the guy that called bs on what I said needs to read the law it is unlawfull to put a 92 engine into a 91
point blank regardles of how you feel

poser_pilot6 -> RE: H22A swap legality (1/16/2007 8:22:51 PM)

You should be able to put a 92 engine into a 91 vehicle...  You just couldnt put a 91 engine into a 92 vehicle.  At least that is my understanding of the rules, if you read different, could you post where you read it?  It would help so everyone can be on the same page.

marbro -> RE: H22A swap legality (1/18/2007 8:36:15 AM)

or you could post why its illegal, because any way you look at it emissions arent being maintained if you change to an older ecu on a newer engine, especially considering older h22's are being put in newer accords

sir_nasty -> RE: H22A swap legality (1/18/2007 4:10:13 PM)

I'm going to call BS on this as well... I live in Montana and I've seen guys LITERALLY put a 454 into a VW bug, we don't have emissions standards/tests....

poser_pilot6 -> RE: H22A swap legality (1/18/2007 4:35:07 PM)

If you dont have emissions, it wouldnt matter.  The area in Oregon where Im from, we didnt have emissions either, so you could pretty much swap anything.  But if you are in an area where you do have to get your car emissions tested, its going to be a different case.  Im sure the law varies from state to state.

Also, just because something is illegal, doesnt mean that it isnt or cant be done.  How many people ALWAYS follow the speed limit?

marbro -> RE: H22A swap legality (1/18/2007 6:01:08 PM)

if you cant make it emissions legal based on the states regulations you really cant say its illegal to put an older engine in a newer car
