Can any one tell me how to replace the radiator fan assembly in my 96 accord? It is completly broken and caused my engine to overheat. I bought the whole assembly (after market) to replace it. I am hoping to get a step by step so that I might be able to change it myself.

My next problem is that after it overheated, we checked the radiator, took of the cap, and found that when the car was running, no fluid was running through the radiator. I am thinking this is either a thermostat or radiator pump problem. I would also like information on how to change the thermostat and if feasible for a non-mechanic, how to change the radiator pump.

The fluid isn't going to flow through the radiator until your car is up to temperature... So if it was cold that would explain why it wasn't working... As far as changing the thermostat it's pretty easy, just get a new one and a new gasket make sure you clean all surfaces/dry all surfaces VERY well before you put on the new gasket, follow your upper radiator hose back to the engine block and you will see it connected to an inlet, there is probably two 10 or 12 mm bolts that hold that on, remove those two bolts and the "thermostat housing" will come off (you may have to pull a little) and there you will see the old thermostat, pull it out, clean the surfaces/dry them, put the new gasket in and re-bolt it. If you are going to use any of that form a seal gasket stuff make sure you use the high temperature stuff and use it sparingly, just a thin coat, when you tighten down the bolts remember that if you used some of that gasket stuff don't tighten them to much or it's going to squish all of it out.

Well I've never done it on a honda but I have done it on multiple other cars. Generally speaking it's very easy to do. just disconnect the wires going to the fan for starters (I think it's one plug right on the fan itself) then there is typically two bolts that hold the plastic shroud on (the piece that the fan is held in place by/attached to) these are at the top of the fan and then either two bolts on the bottom or it's just clipped in. Once you remove those pieces it should just lift up/out. Fairly easy thing to do actually.

I just got off the phone with a mechanic. He said that there is something called a bleeder valve that I HAVE to do something with to get the air out of the radiator or I will burn up my engine. He also said that there has to be a hole in the top of the thermostat if I am going to replace it, but the one I bought doesn't have a hole to let the air pass through. Is that the case with the honda accord?

Since my engine overheated, is there anything else I need to know or check or do that if I don't it would burn up the engine? I am quickly becoming distraught over the whole situation. Would it be better just to have a mechanic look at the thing?

you can do it. to change the fan, there is one electrical plug and four 10mm bolts that hold it on, one at each corner. once the bolts have been removed, pull the fan out through the top.


for the thermostat. make sure that you are using a honda thermostat. if it is a oem honda, it doesnt matter what anyone else tells you, that is the right one.

you do have to burp the system after you have refilled the coolant. there is a bolt right next to the thermostat housing that you loosen to let any air out that has been trapped in the system.

which fan are you replacing ?? the 1 on the driver's side or the 1 on the passanger side ?? is it a 4 or 6 cylinders ..

by calling it the radiator fan i am assuming you mean the 1 on the passanger side.............the 1 on the driver side is the a/c condensor fan .. well also assuming your car is a 4 cylinder .. if it is a 6 cyl fans are reversed ..

if you are replacing the radiator fan , you will need to remove the top radiator hose , from the radiator side , or you cannot pull the fan assembly out ,,
also you need to raise the car and remove the spalsh shield to get to the 2 lower bolts, and you can get the plug from underneath as well..

Sir and Light were correct, there are 4 , 10mm bolts that you have to remove, than you can pull the whole assembly out from the top..



As for the t-stat.. make sure you get a honda t-stat.. it comes in a bag with a new gasket as well ..make sure you pay attention to how the old t-stat came out and was positioned..

anyho, follow the lower radiator hose on the opposite side of the radiator,, ( engine side ) where the hose is clamped to,, that's the t-stat housing . to replace t-stat it wil be easier to remove the throttle intake tube ,, once it is out of the way, unclamp the lower rad hose, remove the 10mm bolts holding the t-stat cover, remove t-stat... reinstall in reverse order..
Now ,, after you are done ,, there is a nipple looking bolt ( 12mm ) on top of the t-stat housing, ( bleeder screw ) loosen it up DO NOT take it all the way out..add coolant to radiator till you see it coming out of bleeder screw, tighten the screw, top off radiator , install cap, start car up and chk for leaks and make sure both fans will come on ..
..
