5th Gen Budget Drivers

10 Attachment(s)
Moved the 2-way active setup from my old car to my '96 LX. Old setup:

HU: Dual XR4110 - AM/FM/Mechless Receiver
Active Crossover: Coustic XM6
Amp: Kenwood KAC-649S, 30 W × 2 + 80 W × 1
Amp: Pyramid PB-110PX, 50 W x 2

Mid's: Dayton Audio RS180-4 7"
Tweets: SEAS Prestige 27TFFNC/G
Sub: Klipschorn Promedia 6" home theater gutted; only the speaker and box

Tried mounting the RS180 in the Accord door with a 1" spacer. It cleared the window but was just too big. It wouldn't quite clear the door panel and I didn't want to cut it.

Read some good things about Aura NS6 6" woofers, specifically that they can be crossed pretty high:

Plus they're $9 each. Smaller diameter than the Daytons but still fairly deep. Also, paper cone and foam surround so they have to be pretty well protected.

Woofer Installation:

Attachment 17772
factory coaxial

Attachment 17773
factory basket

Attachment 17774
basket cut with hole to accommodate magnet - 1/2" spacer - NS6 woofer

Assembled woofers

Tweeter installation:

The brackets were from my old car. They don't bolt to the door panel, just a friction fit.

Dumpster-dived an 8" home theater sub, Polk RM600TD. The amp was blown so I took the the transformer, etc. off of the plate and wired a male AC cord directly to the speaker. Wired a female AC cord to the bridged Kenwood output. The sub sits on the seat but can be unplugged if I need the room.

Have to figure out a way to strap it down so it doesn't go flying if the car gets rear ended. The center seat belt won't go around it.

Cross:
  • Sub low-passed at 120Hz
  • Woofers bandpassed at 120Hz - 3KHz
  • Tweeters high-passed at 2.6KHz

Had to turn the output of the tweeters and subwoofer down to better match the Aura woofers. I think it's because the Auras are 8 ohm drivers. Anyway, after playing with the cross points and output levels I got it sounding pretty good. Get a little alternator/ignition noise sometimes out of the tweets. Probably the cheap Pyramid amp. It really is the single part of the system I should have spent more money on. The 8" Polk goes quite a bit lower than the previous, dumpster-dived 6" Klipschorn home theater sub.

How short it the center belt? I have seen seat belt extenders before.....just an idea.

put the sub in the trunk, rear corner.

Good idea. I'll check out seat belt extenders. It's a wagon so there's no place to stash it.

"A little" noise turned into a lot of noise on a recent long distance trip. Tried rearranging the RCA & power cables with little improvement. Tried an inline noise choke on the crappy Pyramid amp; no improvement. Finally just removed that amp from behind the radio and hooked up the tweeters to the HU's line outputs with a passive crossover. Needed a 15μF cap to cross @~2.6K. Ended up using one 10μF in parallel with two 10μF in series, pic attached. Built a 3dB L-pad and attached it to the XOver just in case the tweeters were too bright; didn't end up needing padding. It sounds good & no more noise!
