Mini-sub enclosures in '91 front doors

I had recently put in a 4X100 amp and a pair of good quality Polk 5-1/4" components in Q-Forms kick panels. Temporarily, I put two Kicker 6-1/2" subs in the rear-deck pods, without enclosures, in "infinite baffle". Bass sounded lousy, even crossed at 80 Hz - couldn't wait to get the required .25 cubic foot boxes built.

Looking around, there wasn't a lot of obvious space for the subs, particularly up front, where I wanted to try them. I finally decided to cut off the lower 6-7" of the factory door panels, and build and install sub boxes there.

Buttoned the sub-woofer enclosures up tonight - I could not be happier with the way they sound, after how muddy the bass was before with these subs in the rear deck and no enclosure save the trunk.

The small sealed boxes really make the bass "pop". I've low-passed them at 240Hz, since they're beside the mid-range drivers now, which are high-passed at 240 Hz.

Unlike when they were in the rear deck, you can't localize the change from one driver pair to the other.

thats pretty spiffy

Thanks - was a fun build; trying to stay calm and balanced and not go overboard with big subs. I'm darned impressed with how well these little Kickers do, and they fit in only 2-3/4" depth.

Plus my staging is good and forward.

nice work. that is the best way to achieve your goal. i like how you used MDF instead of fiberglass (though glass can achieve a more OEM look).

i'd like to see a different "grille" on the sub, but that's just being picky. :)

Thanks! Yeah, I'm kinda' ambivalent about the "grill" look - those are just some drawer pulls I had. I may just find some 6-1/2" grills and paint them to match the grills on the kick-panels.

The carpet matches better in real life, without the flash!
