Polk or Alpine 5.25 Install Questions

Has anyone installed either the Alpine SPS-13C2 or Polk DB 521 and been able to use the factory grill covers?

I am looking to get new speakers for the front doors. I have read all the posts Icould find here and cross referenced with Crutchfield. I seem to get conflicting results. Crutchfield lists only 2 speakers that fit (non-component) and I am not happy with either. What I want to do is install these myself and use the factory grill covers. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Ulitmately I will be using the factory head unit, install new speakers all around and install a small amp. I'll be doing this one step at a time and am starting with the door speakers. Component speakers look a little tough to install on my own (primarily setting the tweeters) and are a little pricey.

What year is your car? I could shoe horn a 6.5 in my doors but the 5.25's worked much better so thats what I went with. They sound pretty good.

It's a 2004 EX. Crutchfield says that top mount depth is the issue, however I seem to read a lot of posts here were people get these to fit. I've got no problemadding a spacer, or cutting out a baffle. My main issue is I want the stock grill cover so that it looks stock.

RE: Polk or Alpine 5.25 Install Questions

I installed JL 6.5" components in my 06 sedan. The hole cut in the doors for the speakers aren't cut for 6.5", but the stock speakers are 6.5". This is b/c the stock speaker mounts further out and has a smaller magnet then regular speakers, so the hole doesn't need to be as big. I recommend just cutting the metal so you can fit 6.5"s like your supposed to. Its very easy if you have a steady hand and a jig saw. As for the depth, any speaker with more then 2" your going to need to make a spacer, which again is very easy. I have a half inch spacer and I still have 2" to 3" of space between the stock grill and the front of the speaker.

You have sold me on the 6.5's. I actually looked at the specs for the Polk db651 and they look like a better fit depth wise. Should only require a small spacer (I read the thread about making one from MDF). Anything else I should look for?
